Is it possible to transfer to an Ivy with a horrible high school record?

After not really participating in high school (never took the SATs, no clubs and blah blah blah) is it possible to do very well in community college and get into an ivy or close to it? I completely turned my life around after I entered my local junior college, and have a 4.0 after four semesters. I've done some chance threads and a lot of people have said I don't even have a shot at NYU because of high school. Is this true? I'm talking about applying as a Junior.

Impossible is nothing…LoL
But seriously you have shown resolve with that 4.0 you have maintained I am sure you will get into a top 30 school…if it helps y not take the SAT/ACT…you dont have anything to loose

Ivies are a long shot.

Yeah, it’s great that you turned around in college and pulled a 4.0 at a CC but it’s hardly unusual. You need to have something better than great grades and involvement in some BS ec’s. Hundreds of students with your story are applying to the same schools, then there are others that didn’t goof off in high school who have the same college grades.

Apply to those top schools if you want but don’t get your hopes up. top 25-30 is very realistic, I had a similar story and am at one of those schools now.

Depends on what you mean by horrible hs record. Anyway, yes it is possible. Check out a couple of these examples.

I guess I should add that I’m Mexican and that I suffered from a medical condition in high school which kept me from doing well my Sophomore and Junior years. I guess there is always a shot!

^^ i did it. 2.7 HS –> 3.5 state school –> cornell

and yeah, you have a good reason to explain the poor HS performance. and URM status always helps lol

ironicallyunsure, could you give me a little more detail on your application? i.e. what school you transferred into and how many credits you applied with? also sat scores if you don’t mind.

transferred into cornell (unless you meant school within cornell? in which case, it’s human ecology). applied with 58 credits completed and 16 in progress, so i came in with 74 as a second semester soph. didn’t send sat scores

aim for a college that doesn’t require high school records if you’re going to transfer junior year, like Rutgers or North Carolina State. a lot of really good ones that are just below ivy league don’t require high school records if you have an associates degree. also, with a 4.0 GPA you should be able to get high-profile summer internships that would look great on an application. :)
