Next semester I would like to get a research position, but at the same time I need to get a work-study job. So I'm wondering if I can work for a professor on a research project as a work-study student?

It depends. Some research positions pay, others don’t.

I worked for a professor one year, but it was mostly administrative tasks.

^so was it really a “research” position?

I should have been more clear – this was a work study job, so I got paid and was working with a professor but it was not research-based. I did some research related work, but not much. I said this mainly to show that there are ways to have your work student AND make a connection with a professor that could potentially lead to more things.
