So I signed up for my classes and I have 8 AM classes every day, but my last class on M/W/F is at 12:05 and on T/Th is as 12:15... so I have no afternoon classes. Oh. And I have a Band Class from 7-9 on Mondays... but yeah.

I'm just wondering. Is it really that difficult to have an 8 AM class in college? I'm used to having to be at school at 7 AM and I've been doing that since about the seventh grade, so 8 doesn't really seem that early to me. But everyone says that 8 AM classes are bad... So.. yeah.

I think it is nice to get classes over and done with in the morning so the afternoon is free.

Just make sure you get to sleep early enough (which can be hard to do in dorms) so you are able to function at 8am. Otherwise class will be just awful.

If you have the discipline to get to them, fine. If not, the consequences can be terrible. The sweet thing about those early classes is that your scheduled day can be over early.

It is if you have a straight block on campus from 8 am to 9 pm 4 days of the week (though that was split between classes, research, and work). If you get done early it’s nice so that you have the rest of the day ahead of you. But some classes are terrible in the morning (I hated having thermodynamics at 8 am, for instance)

If its a class you’re confident you’ll understand, then its not that hard to wake up early. I work full time every morning at 7 AM this summer, after a whole school year of waking up for 11 AM classes.

One of my best classes was at 7:45. It really depends on you as a person. I thought it was really nice to start early and finish at noon everyday- I was able to spend the rest of the day doing homework, going to the beach, hanging out with friends, etc.
If you like to stay up/out late, then this schedule will likely be difficult for you.

If you stay up late and wake late then an 8 AM class is a terrible idea, on the flip side if you go to bed early and wake early then getting classes out of the way early is good. Like people are saying it all depends on the person…personally I have to get up at 5 AM so…8 sounds nice to me :P

If you’re a morning person it might be okay. However, would you have gone to high school every single day at 7AM if no one was making you do it? I don’t know, there’s something about college that makes early classes suck. If you’re a morning person you might not be that affected, however. I personally am literally incapable of going to any class before 10, so I don’t schedule early classes. It sucks because a few times a week I’m in class till 6, but if I schedule something early I WILL NOT GO.

Actually, I’d rather have the 5 than the MWF 8 AMs I had last year. Every day waking up at the same time is better for you than having different sleep schedules.

I am NOT a morning person and I managed to do fine in my very boring 8 AM class. It’s really not as bad as most people say IMO.

It depends on the person. I managed to get to all of my 8 AMs freshman year without missing a class, but it was not fun! haha I never scheduled an 8 AM ever again. Your schedule sounds nice though because you’ll have your afternoons free.

I encouraged my D to take 8 AM classes after her first year. She has never been a morning person and it was horrible getting her to school. We lived 5 blocks from the HS and she was almost late mostly every day - H or I generally had to drive her. She wants to be a teacher, which means she will have to be awake early and at school possibly as early as 7 or 7:30 (our HS starts at 8:05). I wanted her to get some practice. For me, early work time start was one reason I became a lawyer - I rarely have to be anywhere before 10 AM.

If you’re not a morning person, early classes can help you acclimate to the work force.

You gotta get to bed at a decent hour the night before. Plan to have some breakfast food (breakfast bars, coffee drinks, etc.) in your room so you can roll out the door straight to class in the morning. Be sure you have an alarm that you WILL wake up for. If you have a roommate “choice” form, ask for someone who doesn’t stay up late/gets up early.

My D was able to get great professors for her first couple years by taking early classes (although the earliest they start at her school is 8:30). She used Ratemyprofessor.com, and found her freshman year that the only way to get the good profs as a newbie was to take early classes. She has the self discipline to make it work, though, so know yourself.

I’m wondering about this 8 AM classes thing too…I’ve had to start class at 7:30 for all of high school and had school starting at 7:50 I think in middle school, but I’m still not a morning person, but I think there’s some classes I’m going to have to take in the morning because of certain classes later that take up other time slots. Plus, I might need the time to get stuff done later (music major- practicing), and if I say that I’m going to try and get up to do homework/practicing in the morning before class, that’s not going to happen. If it’s a class, then I have to get up and go…where if it’s homework and I don’t have to be anywhere, then it’s easier to put that off til later…so that’s the way I see it, if I have to do something early in the morning.

Every single person who says “I’m taking 8AM classes so I can be done by 11-12 everyday” ** WILL ** be ****ing and whining about it two weeks into the semester. I had 8AM’s every day both semesters last year, and not only are they a huge pain in the ass to wake up for, but getting done with class at 11 sucks because most of your friends will be in class till 3 or 4 and while you may think differently now, you ** won’t ** use that down time in the afternoon to study. You’ll sit around procrastinating and be bored. Then your friends will get out of class at 3-4 and you’ll go hang out/eat dinner and then find yourself at 9-10PM realizing that you haven’t started any homework and then you’re up till 1-2AM doing work and you get 5 hours of sleep and then waking up the next morning at 7 for class sucks, as always. And that repeats every day.

I think 10 AM classes are more efficient. You can easilly wake up around 8:30 or 9 and get some stuff done/eat breakfast, and have a lot less to worry about later. Plus there’s less down time of doing nothing.
