Okay so I have completed my first year at my SUNY Community College. I have a 3.3 GPA and I have a 1410/2400 SAT Score. But before now, I haven’t really looked into transferring into good schools I always had my mindset at SUNY Albany. I was just wondering, if it is too late to consider other transfer schools, like even some private ones. Schools like Northeastern, NYU, USC, etc.? I am just wondering, my advisory recommended me to do research before making a final say for transfer and I did and I see that UAlbany isn’t the only school. Thanks guys!
Yes, unfortunately, it’s too late to apply to some of the private universities. Although some of the state university have rolling admissions. My friend said he was accepted to SUNY alabny just three weeks ago
@NASA2014 oh no no, not in that sense. Ugh I worded it so wrong. I will be attending a second year at my Community College haha. I will be applying to schools next year when it comes time. It’s just they all require quite a bit, and I will work very hard to get it done to get into these schools. I am just asking if it’s too late to try to change my motive to get my s***t together and do what I need to do to be a competitive candidate at these schools?
You can apply this fall to transfer for the fall of 2018. How much can your parents pay per year? Transfers don’t generally get as much aid as students who enroll as freshmen, so where you transfer to may depend on what kind of financial aid package you can get.
You just finished your 1st year. My guess is that you’re going to get your AS degree before transferring, right? So you’ll spend another year at CC?
What I see you asking is what you can do about that 3.3 GPA and/or your overall transfer package to make yourself a more attractive candidate.
Well, for starters, you could take a class or two this summer, and nudge that GPA up a bit. There’s probably time to do it, and that way your transcript would reflect the higher score during the fall semester.
You could pull together some GREAT letters of recommendation that reflect a different person than the one who applied to college last year.
But I’ve got to ask: What’s wrong with SUNY Albany? There;s a HUGE price difference between SUNY and the other schools you mention, and as @austinmshauri mentioned, financial aid will be trickier now than it was last year as an incoming freshman.
Nothing is wrong with SUNY Albany, I just want to explore all my possible avenues, that is all.
You have all summer to do research. what are you planning to major in?
@bjkmom Computer Science. I am going to get an AS in Computer Information Systems.
I used to bash at SUNY Albany. But now I’m loving it. I’m very exited to start my fall semester. Sure has its up and downs as every college does, but it’s a good university.
@NASA2014 Yup, nothing wrong with SUNY Albany. Probably of the best public schools in NYS. But like I said, I wanna explore all my avenues before making a final call. Me and my parents had our eyes set on Albany for years now we become blind for all the other possibilities there were.
I was also accepted to buffalo, but didn’t have my major. It would have been nice to go there. If I went there I would have major in environment science or geography
@NASA2014 That was another school I was looking at, as they have a pretty good CS program.
Buffalo is better than Albany for CS (Albany is better for Information/tech management).
Are you taking second summer session classes to bring that GPA up a bit? Where are you with your pre-reqs?
What’s your budget?
Are you getting TAPS, Pell, are you likely to get the Excelsior?
3.3 at community college is good but not sufficient for the universities you listed.
You may have a shot at universities such as St Lawrence (reach), Hobart and William Smith (match), Marist (high match/reach for school of computing). OOS reach would include Dickinson, match St Michael’s.
Buffalo woukd be a great goal and likely more affordable than these private colleges.
Strive to get as many A’s as possible, especially since only Fall semester will count for your GPA.
Get involved on campus, especially in CS related clubs.
If you get a 3.95- 4.0 in the fall AND have a real presence in clubs, you MIGHT have a shot at Cornell CALS for one of their computing majors since they favor top students (like, you’d have to be top3 in your major) from nys.
