Hi everyone, I currently attend a local community college where I live(New York), and I’m thinking of transferring out after this semester. I currently have a 3.3 gpa from the fall semester, I’m trying to either get the same gpa or try my best to get a 3.5. Last semester I took one remedial course, and 3 college credit classes, this semester is exactly the same. I currently have 8 credits, I will have 18 credits once I finish this semester, I know that I have to send out my hs transcripts and sat scores because I won’t have a total of 24 credits(I also searched up that if you have 24 credits or more you don’t need to send your hs transcripts or sat, but I will only get 24 if I stay another semester then transfer but I’m trying to leave now), the problem is that my hs gpa was around a 2.6 and my sat score was a 980. I know that is very low, but I’m trying to redeem myself by getting a really good gpa so colleges don’t really have to look at my hs/sat scores that much. Btw, I’m a Sociology major and I’m trying to pursue a career in Speech Pathology. None of NY colleges that are upstate don’t have “Communication and Science Disorder” as a major, they have it for the grad school.
I’m trying to go away for college, but if that doesn’t work out I have some local 4 year colleges that I have listed below.
Do you guys think I have any chances of getting to in any of these schools? (Also, I graduated hs in 2014 and I just started college this year so I am a freshman and I’m 20 years old I’ll be 21 in August, is that a little too old to live in the dorms? I mean if i dorm i would be graduating by 24-25? I don’t think thats too bad)

Also do you have any advice on how to tell my mom that dorming for college is a good idea? And also can you guys let me know how the school life is for any of those colleges, party scene, greek life, academics?
College is about learning how to be an adult, and making connections. It’s much easier to do that if you live away from home. How much can you afford per year?
Well, if I attend a college in my state it would be more affordable for me (of course taking out loans if I choose to go upstate but it will still be affordable), but if I go out of state it has to be like between 20,000-30,000. I can’t go higher than that.
Hey! I’m in a similar situation. I also have a 3.3 gpa and was looking to transfer to some of these schools. My hs gpa was like a 2.4 but I’ve already completed 30 credits so I don’t think I’ll really have to send them out to any schools.
You probably have a good chance of getting into any schools in Arizona. I’m from California and that’s where everyone goes. I know people who got into ASU out of high school with like a 2.5 gpa. University of Arizona will also probably accept you- they have a pretty high acceptance rate too. I think U of A is better though (some people think of ASU as kind of a joke). Both are really big party schools with decent academics though. U of Arizona is bigger on football though.
I’ve also looked at schools in Florida. FSU is at the top of my list but the major I’m applying for is selective so idk. The average transfer gpa for the University of Miami is a 3.3 but I heard that last year they extended the application deadline bc they weren’t getting enough transfers and they’re doing the same this year so it might be a little easier to get into then usual (but idk how much they’ll weigh your high school grades).
I don’t think your chances of getting in the University of Florida are very high (I heard it’s pretty competitive and they favor in-state transfers more). I also looked into Fordham but it’s probably the most expensive school on that list. I did a tuition estimate and they estimated they’d give me $20,000 but I’d still have to pay $50,000 and there’s better schools for a lot cheaper (even Syracuse is cheaper).
I don’t really know about the rest of that list (although I did have to block Pace because I requested information and they called me like everyday for two weeks).
I don’t really know what you’re looking for but a lot of people I know also went to school in Oregon. The university of Oregon is actually a pretty good school with a pretty high acceptance rate and they’re pretty big on parties and frats and sports. I also got accepted into Loyola University of Chicago twice- once with a 3.16 gpa and once with a 3.3. They also don’t have an application fee so I would look into that if you’re up for Chicago. I’m also applying to the University of San Fransisco (I can’t remeber they’re average accepted transfer gpa but I know it’s lower than 3.3).
Wow thanks for that info! I’m gonna look into Chicago, I’m not really into states that are really further into the map like Oregon lol I’m from New York I think I will feel like the odd one out lol! But anyway, I’m thinking of sending out all my materials after my spring semester. Have you made your decision on where you’re going to transfer?
You will only be able to borrow $5500 because you’ll still have freshman status when you transfer.
As a soph, you’ll only be able to borrow $6500.
You have OOS schools on your list that will cost $40-50k+ per year. You have no funds for those.
If your parents aren’t helping you pay, then you’ll need to pick schools that you can commute to from home. There isn’t a tuition fairy out there. And you can’t borrow that much.
