I am a minority, but I got into Phillips Exeter Academy without using any of those programs you listed above. It’s because of my grades, ECs, hardwork, and interview and all the other factors that make you elgible to be accepted.

So much ill will…I’m getting all uncomfortable just reading it.
To both sides: please grow up, ignore the other party.

And it’s really confusing to read this thread, honestly, because there are so many different topics swirling around (not to mention personal attacks). How did we get here from “is black a hook”?

prepv, you live in a world of “different” ideals. it is hard to understand exactly what u are arguing for anymore. being a minority is a hook, period. to argue against that is arrogant, regardless of how ur opinions are on how it “should” be done (admissions process wise). so please, dont bother telling us otherwise. k?

Great UrbanFlop: Prep for Prep & NJ Seeds only admit hardworking students with excellent grades and Teacher recommendations. They also have to score high to be accepted and an admissions slot is highly coveted in NY. They also do a “ton” of extra work during the summer, at school and during the week. This is just “one” means B Schools use to diversify their campus with highly motivated and high scoring minorities. All URM’s who get accepted to the Top Tier Schools are very smart, outstanding EC’s, Teacher Recs, good interviews, great test scores and academic grades. Their hook is their career academic results. My D worked hard and excelled regarding all the above. Wealth would be considered a hook by some. However, if she wasn’t such an accomplished student, affluence couldn’t get her in.

Race and admissions is full of Urban Myths. If being a URM is a hook, so is wealth and coming from an affluent school with deep pocketed parents that will someday contribute to the endowment, therefore, kids from that school or area are accepted in droves as money helps the school maintain their excellence and provides funds for FA. I guess other hooks are Sports, legacy status, being male for balance, an accomplished Pianist, a great singer & performer, coming from Kansas & Kentucky for regional diversity, Middle Class & poor whites are sought after as well, etc…

We all have a hook in this case and it is disengenuous to act like URM’s get all the breaks while the rest of us get in purely on merit. Please, let’s get real!

prepv. i hope that i never meet u. seriously i dont know how u function. YES wealth in certain circumstances could also be a hook. being a minority IS a hook. that doesnt say that others have better merit, no one is saying that. but if u had two people with equal merit who would get in. the person of minority.

It’s not like prepv doesn’t get it, s/he refuses to get it. :D

prepv is stupid. gasp

Candidate: Equal merit??? Since there are no two candidates exactly alike, there is no such thing as equal merit. If there was a “formula” then they could plug in the data and let a computer emotionlessly select each B Schools class. It’s an analysis that has many variables at play with the ultimate goal being to “build” a nice balanced class. Your last two sentences are simplified and quite amusing once again reflecting a serious detachment of how things work in the B School admissions process. At any rate, let the mind set emanating from the existence in a bubble live on. We all are poor little victims of the powerful minorities in their skyscrapers and mansions with their trust funds taking everything from us. They have all the breaks in this world as we are the only ones who deserve an admission to HADES because we own the joint as we’re the over represented MAJORITY. Unbelievable!

So…to clarify…Prepv is arguing that being a minority is NOT a hook, and everyone else is disagreeing with her/him?
P.S. - LOL Candidate.

haha i think the lol is to prepv. seriously, u dont make sense. u do understand that if u were to pick over two people of SIMILAR qualifications, that the minority would win. it diversifies the school. truly u are a confusing and quite angry adult. i hope u atleast understand what we are getting at. good riddance shall i ever cross ur path. p.s. - LOL 5school

I think to some point, it is a hook, but I don’t think that is a good thing really. I know all schools have a policy that says they do not admit based on ethincity, race, or gender. So if you gave a black person admission over a white person because of diversity wouldn’t that be breaking the their policy?

i think what they mean in their policy is that basically if you have everything they want but they dont like your race, your not “kicked out” of the possible admittance. their goal is to “diversify”, and they are allowed to “pick and choose” to an extent, though it should be hateful or “discriminant” by their main means.

So…to clarify…Prepv is arguing that being a minority is NOT a hook, and everyone else is disagreeing with her/him?

Yep, that’s correct, but only part of it. Everyone is against Prepv also because of her arrogance and insulting language. Really I think Prepv is trying too hard - keep coming back with endless posts despite being shooed away. It’s internet and people will keep expressing their opinion that minority IS a hook. The more Prepv argues, the more sarcastic people get and the less credibility they give her.

Taking internet discussion too far, insulting everyone, creating different IDs. Does it even worth it? Craziness!

well seriously being in a minority helps doesnt hurt. come on people the world isnt filled with pretty purple flowers, and butterflies. there is sommeee preference in the admissions office…

True. “It’s not always rainbows and butterflies
It’s compromise that moves us along
dah dah dah…”
Ignorance may not hurt so bad, but arrogance kills.

arrogance and incompetence are my pet peeves. PREPV U yes U have CROSSED THAT LINE…:
my line -------------------------------------------
prepv.

candidate cracks me up…very ferocious in his humor.
My line: ____________________________________________________
Pretentious, uneducated jerks.

Have you guys considered the fact the Prepv may potentially be a simple teenager who thinks that it’s fun to purposely antagonize you guys? Posing as a “veteran”? I mean, I myself have a disagreement with her once; then I apologized, and she accepted. Nice and easy. No stress required!

1) prepv, if u are listening, i am a debate freak, so this is more of a fun event for myself than an antagonistic one.
2) the ferocious humor is derived from a female. 5school, i am of the feminine race :P

Me and other Parents who are friends had a great meeting at D’s School with Head Master & FA Director. Everyone agreed that Diversity needs to be enhanced and FA Director came up with a number needed to increase URM’s at school. Friends and I discussed and we will surpass the amount of money Director said was needed. Checks will be cut and delivered Thursday. Thank God my friends and I are fortunate enough to make a substantial contribution to the schools diversity effort by increasing Financial Aid. Also will provide more SSAT Test Prep for those who can’t afford it. What an advantage my D had over so many others when it came to the SSAT Test.

The majority of parents at our school provide private tutors that come to our houses and provide one on one extensive prep. I personally paid $350.00 per hour and it increased D’s score and was worth it. Even when friends visited D at the house our tutor helped them as well and vice versa. Admissions Reps are smart and understand that affluent schools like ours have parents with the resources to provide our children with the absolute best SSAT Test preparation. That’s why they don’t strictly judge poor & moderate income families by the SSAT Test scores because Adm Reps know they can’t compete with wealthy kids test prep like those that comprise our student body. URM’s at our school will be given more access to the best test prep to level the playing field. Head Master was happy and so was I and other parents committed to increased diversity at D’s School. God has blessed my family with much, for that a lot is expected. It feels great to financially give to such a worthy endeavor as diversity at our prestigious school.
