Is it true that if you're a girl, you'll have 'easier' acceptance to Tech?

I've been on websites where students say they got 'easy acceptance' to Tech, mostly because they are females. They claim this because Tech has low female attendance, so they're desperate for female students, whether they're qualified or not. They also had a 3.3 GPA (which is pretty low for Tech, I've heard) no APs, and very few extra-curriculars. I personally find this hard to believe, and since some of the users here are current students, I was wondering if anyone knows/knew a female student that matches (or comes close) to the description above, yet still got accepted. Thanks. :]

Patently false.

I’m so glad to see that what those girls said wasn’t true. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye: Thanks so much for the info.

I am so glad I read this post, I got out in '07 and always wondered if they bumped a more qualified guy just to let me in, all my roommates wondered that as well. gthopeful thanks so much. I can tell you this, I don’t know any stats but I have heard and have experienced a much easier time getting housing.

The acceptance rate is still higher for women, though.

Yes but they still turn down a significant number of the applicants which tells me that Tech is not bumping men to accept women.

Well, maybe the majority of women who are applying to that school are borderline ■■■■■■■■; so the women who do have a 3.3 GPA are looked upon as geniuses. Therefore get accepted.

Not sure about the 3.3 thing, but I do know that if you are an engineering major and you get out that means you survived the weed out process and can hang with the men, at least intellectually.

From the people who applied at my high school in FL, all the guys with above 3.8 gpa were accepted and all the girls with above 3.8 were deferred. The guys were all pretty well qualified with their extra-curricular and hobbies, girls at my school had less engineering oriented extra-curricular.

i specifically asked about this when i toured and they said that gender is not taken into consideration.

but why is the acceptance rate higher for girls? who knows. my guess would be that admissions is looking for a diverse student body and girls who want to be engineers are usually interesting people (since they’re defying stereotype). but that’s just speculation.

My understanding is that the court ruled against sex preference at the same time they ruled against race preference. You don’t mess with the courts.

Face it, girls tend to get more involved in activities. So even if they may have a slightly lower GPA they might look like a better choice than a guy with a really high GPA and no social skills or extracurriculars

That’s a pretty parochial interpretation. According to GT’s Common Data Set, 59.9% of women were admitted and 58.2% of men were admitted. That’s essentially nothing, and is much smaller than schools with known gender bias (e.g., MIT, some of the well-known LAC’s).

You have to consider that GT is not quite yet a ‘default’ place for women to apply, so those that do tend to have their stuff together: solid grades, involved, highly motivated. So they ought to be getting in at a higher rate than some of the guys who apply.
