Is it wise to ask schools to send info or will we get too much junk mail?

My D is finishing her freshman year in HS and we have started learning about the college process. in doing that I have found a couple colleges that seem particularly interesting. Do you think it's ok to go ahead and ask them to send us some info about their school, or would we just be setting ourselves up to start getting lots of unsolicted mailings?

I’ve signed up to get information from a few colleges, and so far they’ve each sent just one thing. What would really set you up for junk mail would be if your daughter signs up for the college search selection thing on the PSAT. I got lots of mail (maybe 1 or 2 a day in March) from checking that box (could be good or bad depending on how much mail you like and how far you are in the search process). If one particular college seems interesting, though, go ahead and sign up for more information–I think at some colleges they even keep track of that kind of thing, so they’ll have her name on record as someone with demonstrated interest. Most of the stuff colleges send is also on their website, but it’s handy to have it in paper sometimes.

I think the answer to both questions is yes … for my two oldest the mailings led them to consider schools they would have not have considered otherwise … and yes, they got tons of junk mail.
