Hi guys,
I applied to Cornell- CALS ED and was deferred to Regular Decision. I’m currently drafting an LOCI to submit by the February 15th deadline, and I’m wondering if it’s wise to include other college acceptances. I applied to 13 schools, and I’ve heard from 5:
Accepted: CU Boulder, University of Minnesota (home state flagship) , UW- Madison, and the University of Michigan- Ann Arbor (YAY)
Deferred: UNC Chapel Hill (OOS is just brutal) and Cornell
I’m super excited about the UMich acceptance, and it’s really likely I will attend if I get decent financial aid. I’d love some feedback as to whether I should mention these in my LOCI, because I don’t want to offend the admissions board by sounding too full of myself.
Thank you!
That would be a definite NO.
What would be the point? It is not about other schools. It is about why you are interested in Cornell and a good match for Cornell.
Congratulations on your admissions. I know some super-strong students who were deferred by U Michigan Ann Arbor early action this year, so that is no small feat!
I agree with @TomSrOfBoston . While the AO will not think that you are “too full of” yourself, you run the risk of Cornell saying, “We wish you all the best at UMich.”
If things do not work out with Cornell, be advised that UMich is an excellent school. Good luck.
Agree with the above posters that it would not be wise to mention other universities in your LOCI.
You may be confusing a request for increased financial aid in which case it sometimes is wise to let one school know of another school’s superior financial aid offer–but that is not the case here.
Congratulations on Minnesota, Madison & Michigan !
Okay, thank you all for your help! My GC told me that mentioning other acceptances was preferable, but he is notoriously unreliable, so I’m so grateful for your advice! @TomSrOfBoston @TheGreyKing @skieurope @Publisher
Again, not the case here, but as an FYI, informing UMich of a superior FA package will yield no fruit. OP is OOS for UMich, which does not claim to meet need for OOS students. The only way to get additional aid from them is to file an appeal which would require a significant change in financial situation.
Just want to clarify that UMich would meet the need of OOS students with less than $90k family income and $50k asset started this year.
Absolutely not in a letter/email expressing interest. You want them to think they are your one true love!
