is it worth coming here????

hi im an indian student with very good grades a good sat score and decent co-curricular activities and want to pursue aerospace eng.
i have been accepted into purdue univ(with scholarship)
im know for a fact that i would have got into cornell,carnegie-mellon etc
had i taken the sat subject tests(dont ask me why i couldnt take em)

i would like to find out if its really worth coming here...the rankings say yes...but the problem is i know A LOT of people who are not bright at all but have been accepted which kinda puts me off

also if anyone has any info on what value a purdue aero eng degree has in the aerospace industry(in short placements)??

help would be appreciated...seriously

Purdue is very well respected here. The average Joe here in the US thinks that Purdue is Ivy League. Anyway, the engineering and management schools are top notch and any company knows that an engineering degree from Purdue means a lot. My son is a freshman there and he says most of the boys on his hall applied to MIT and scored over 1400 on their SAT. Look, not everyone can get into Cornel and MIT, so you are going to find many Ivy-qualified students at Purdue. Aero-engineering I think is one of the top schools there and in the US. Many astronauts graduated Purdue, my son knows which ones but I can't remember. My son loves the school although it is very hard and he studies almost 24/7.

ive heard purdue is full of indians ...and i mean it..its like a mini india out there and also many people with low grades too get into that univ. so the drawback is tht cause of this many people dont tend to do well cause of the friends groups they've formed where many ppl arent so serious in their studies...so it proves a disaster...also ive heard tht purdue also has the highest drop out percentage as compared to the other univs..so to get into the specialised 3rd yr onwards and to get ur elective subjects u really have to slog ur butts off..
on the whole i feel purdue is not a great univ...its good for a backup though since it is in the top 10

I believe you will not see those type of dropout statistics for the honors engineering departments. Many applicants to the engineering school will be put in Honors Engineering if their scores are high enough. I agree with Tookie, there are many straight A, high-scoring students there. Not everyone can go to MIT. Son is in the honors engineering dept and works very hard and loves it. All his friends, classmates are serious students too which helps as you are not surrounded by the kids that barely got in because of the high school records. The Aerospace program looked upon highly in the USA. My son has friends in the aerospace program and they work hard and enjoy the school.

Purdue University - West Lafayette.

Whether or not if it's worth attending there or not?

If you are an out-of-state student, and do not receive much scholarships, do not.

If you are an out-of-state student, and do receive much scholarships, sure why no?

If you are an in-state, why not?

I went to Purdue out-of-state, no scholarships. Even so, I landed a superb job when I graduated. The experience was definitely worthwhile.

I don't recall a single instance where I couldn't get into a course I wanted to take, although not every course is given every semester.

If you pass the freshman engineering physics course, you'll do fine in the rest of your courses. Few engineers drop out after freshman year.

@hazmat
what was that last quote about the employers thing.....are the numbers like the major employers from purdue....or how loghly purdue is rated by these companies or what???
and is that list reliable???

apparently you haven't visited the aeroengineering site or you would recognize where these numbers came from. https://engineering.purdue.edu/AAE/Students/Ugrad/

I believe the list to be reliable........it is Purdue reporting where there graduates went to work and how many students to each employer. This isn't rocket science .......... it is what you said you wanted to know. Maybe you should have chosen one of those schools that you know you would have gotten admitted to.........you know the ones who didn't give you money. Maybe you did more research for them. Purdue is a fine school w/ a good track record of sending their engineers to lucrative jobs.

^^yeah i found the linka little while earlier...it is the number of people hired by these companies....boeing 15....thats certainly a lot...but i guess thats coz boeing has a research lab at purdue...really helpful info though....and the placements do seem to be very good.

i used to work at a pre-employment screening company (we run background checks) and a lot of the big companies listed above were clients. the people that graduated from purdue seemed to do pretty good financially. if you do apply at one of those companies, you will get a background check run that will include criminal, ss, former jobs, and every education institution you list on the job application. so be good little boys!

Purdue may accept a lot of students wi/ low stats, etc. but it is also very good at weeding out the students who don't belong in college--or at least not at Purdue :)

that's my perception and what I've heard from several students.

oh, and p.s. I have no clue exactly how much tout this carries, but my older sister was accepted to UChicago, Northwestern, and Purdue for grad school, and she picked Purdue bc of all the money their biochem dept. had for research...

You're better off majoring in electrical or mechanical IMO. The aircraft companies would rather hire people from these fields than from aerospace.

i am stuck deciding between purdue and indiana university, one thing i dont like about purdue is they 50% dropout rate (i heard that somewhere), also they dont have finance as a major

any suggestions about which school

We live in Indiana and my kids have MANY friends and former classmates that attend both schools. It's pretty popular to stay in state her I suppose is why. The majority that attends IU do not like the school. The majority that attends Purdue, does. I am not saying this because my son goes to Purdue, it is the honest opinion of my kids' friends and former classmates. Many different majors, situations and reasons.

to the OP: I am a current purdue engineering student and also a international student...if you are coming to Purdue don't major in aerospace engineering because most of the companies require government clearances for jobs so non-citizens cannot get those jobs. Also the aersopace industry is kind of tight right now. I would suggest for you to major in EE or ME...to keep your options open.

LoL how can you say that you KNOW would have gotten into Cornell and Carnegie Mellon if you didn't take any SAT IIs?

It seems like you can't even spell and use grammar correctly. Your SAT Reading and Writing couldn't have been good. Don't bash schools, especially if you haven't gotten into any better ones. <_<

Umm... no? Purdue has a very good enginnering program. But there's still a huge gap of schools between Purdue and the lower Ivy leagues. The only Ivy qualified students you'll find are Indiana residents who want a cheap education at a decent engineering program.
