Is it worth it to double major?

Do you think it is worth it to double major? Do you think employers/grad schools find it attractive?

I am currently thinking of double majoring in political science and English. I think that I could get both done in four years. To me it seems worth it because it is only twenty more credits that a minor.

Opinions, your story, let me know.

I’m doing CS and Physics and I have no regrets. I don’t care if grad schools like it or not… physics is something I’ve always liked, but I wanted to major in CS. This way, I get to study both disciplines… and it’s worked out fine. It’s been tough at times, but overall, I’d say it’s been one of the most rewarding decisions I’ve made.

Go for it. You never know how courses in different departments can expand your mental horizons.

Who cares if schools like it. Bottom line: in most cases, the more you do, the better off you are. If something happens with the job you end up with, you have a backup. If you want to have a degree in both, then go for it. If not, then don’t waste your time.

I want to double major in polisci and journalism/communication, I wanted to go to GWU and do the political communication major but I decided not to go there for various reasons.
its not a bad idea it gives you more options after graduation

I considered double majoring until I found out you have to write two theses if you double major at my college …

Ouch. That’s strange. Thank goodness mine only makes you choose one to write about!

You can actually manage to write just one if the majors are relatively connected (for example, mathematics and economics), but if you double major in disparate fields, that could not be accomplished.

Still… I’m doing a CS paper that might be considered “close enough” to Physics, if you stood at the other end of the hall, turned the lights off, and squinted. I wonder how many people actually end up writing both theses? Sheesh.

At my school, UW, the thesis in PoliSci is optional, but i’m on the road to honors, so I will probably have too. I am not positive my second major would be English. I have also thought about Communications, History, Geography, or the joined polisci and economics program. Decision, decisions…

Only if you can finish it in time without taking additional course work. Also be careful in taking on a harder 2nd major from the one you plan to do a career/grad school might bring your gpa down.
