Is it worth it to self-study for an AP exam?

My school doesn't offer any AP/IB courses, and I'm taking the highest courses offered (honors). I know that colleges are supposed to judge you in the context of your school, but would it help a lot if I self-studied and took an AP exam? I was thinking about taking Literature, since that's my strength. I'm also planning to take the Lit SAT II, so would it just be redundant?
I figure that self-studying might show colleges that I like to challenge myself (and I do :P).
Thoughts?
And how much harder are the Lit SAT II and the the AP Lit exam than SAT CR?
Thanks :)

Bumppppppp!

Yes, English Literature will make an easy self-study. You just have to prepare for the testing situation such as essays etc. Chances are, it’ll knock off a year of English at college.

For me, here are some of the best APs/tests to have taken with a little self-studying from what you learn in high school:
US History
World History
US Government
Biology
English Lit/Lang
Statistics or Calculus
Other possible great APs but it may not be as useful (well to me)/requires a lot for self-study:
Physics
Art History
Chemistry
Foreign Language (not Spanish Literature)

What about Psychology?

Psychology is an easy study, but the college credit you get from it isn’t worth taking it (well that’s my standpoint).

I think environmental science is the most useless AP credit to have unless its for the Siemens award / AP scholar award but it is easy to study.

Do you guys think there’s any point to me taking an AP exam?
