Is it worth it to tranfer

Hello,

I am a rising sophomore at The College of New Jersey, currently in a business major and interested in transferring to another college for a business-related major.

3.53 GPA
1300 SAT

Think about transferring to Rutgers New Brunswick Business School. Unsure if the better reputation as a business school and a more substantial amount of alumni will make it worth it to transfer. Uncertain if there are any other colleges to apply to transfer to, please let me know if transferring is a good idea.

Also, hoping to raise my GPA up this sophomore year to become more competitive among the transferring applicants.

What are your long-term career goals? TCNJ is widely known in the metro area. Rutgers does have a better name, but not by a whole lot. If you are looking to live and work outside of the east coast, then RU definitely has a better name recognition.

Is financial aid an issue?

To be totally honestly, still unsure for career goals. Financial aid is not an issue, just unsure if my grades is where it needs to be to for acceptance in a different school.

There are a handful of fields where the prestige of the undergrad college matters: IB, consulting, law, etc. But for the most part, people don’t really care after your first few years of work experience. If one of these fields are of interest, then definitely try to transfer. But you’ll have to shoot for ivy league schools, UChicago, Stanford, MIT, etc.

If your ultimate goal is something else then I wouldn’t bother. You can always get a masters degree at a more prestigious school. The difference in prestige between TCNJ and RU is not as big as you think it is. People know about TCNJ, it is well regarded.

Alright, thank you! I’m afraid I won’t be able to make it to the ivy league standards.
Also, I’m assuming my final GPA will end anywhere from 3.5-3.8 ~ so I’m considering pursuing a master’s degree. I read online that a master’s degree is helpful if you are unable to land a job after undergraduate completion. On top of this, employers tend to pay more attention to which graduate school an applicant graduated from. Where would I have a good shot at applying to with my GPA and college I’m graduating from?

If you get your GPA in the 3.7 range you will be competitive for many programs. Anything on the quantitative side is generally better (math, statistics, CS, etc). Humanities masters degrees are generally not useful for career advancement.

If you’re looking for a masters degree in business (MBA) then they value work experience, so getting good internships next summer would be key.
