I was recently accepted to NYU, and I've been offered approximately $33,000, and although it says my expenses would be $62,000, I've been looking into it, and it seems like I could get much cheaper room and board. I've also already obtained a scholarship for $1500 every year, and I've applied for more and hopefully that will help a little. It seems like I'd have to pay $22,000-$25,000 a year, depending on room and board, and not including possible loans

My parents say they will cover $12,000 a year minimum, possibly even $20,000 a year, but considering I've been accepted to SUNY Binghamton for $19,000 and Union College for around $15,000, I don't know if I want to do that to my very middle class parents or to my future of paying off debts. NYU is truly my dream school, but I do want to go to law school to become and international lawyer, and I'm wondering if racking up debt now is worth it. Thoughts?

going 100k into loans for NYU to go to law school / int lawyer is a high price tag
dont forget that there will be more fees if you go to law school

if nyu is your dream and you feel that it is worth going into 100k debt (years to pay off with a decent amount a month) then do it. you cant put a price on chasing a dream.

ofcourse nyu has the better opportunities, location, job placement, and education but try to compare that to the money that you are saving. If you think it is worth it go to nyu.

I personally think that if the benefits outweigh the cost, then do it.
However, most people here will advise to walk the cheapest route.

well actually, Columbia is my dream, but I got waitlisted unfortunately. I’m wondering if the better connections really are worth the price tag mostly. I keep thinking I want to go to NYU, but considering the cost, I wonder how difficult it will be to pay back, especially on top of law school debts.

Out of 62000, you’ve been offered 33000. Plus 1500 for the scholarship you already have, and then let’s take the middle case scenario of 16000 from your parents.

That would mean you have to pay 62000-50500=11500
If you can get a job during college, that will help with the costs, and maybe more scholarships come through. That leaves you with approximate 10000 a year, and 40000 in total. It’s certainly not as bad as other NYU students get, and if NYU is worth so mucHto you, it is manageable.

I know a few people who turned down columbia for nyu (dont sak me why) because they liked the department that they were planning to major at nyu better
I also know quite a few NYU students who have beat out Columbia student competitors for internships and jobs in NYC.

How long it would take to pay back is dependent on you tbh. You can cut costs to a bare minimum during undergrad years, take on paid internships/parttime jobs during the year, and paid internships during the summer to ease the debt. Become a RA junior or senior year and u dont have to pay for room and board…

Expect to be paying back loans for atleast a decade or two if u do law school + undergrad at nyu.

@ what giantmidget said if you look at it that way, 10k a year for nyu isnt that much. take it.
