So, would the invested time in studying for the SATs again, retaking a 2260 (680 cr, 800 m, 780 w), and scoring higher help my chances of getting into the nation's top 20 universities?

Or are the SATs for students at my level not that important to adcoms compared to other criteria, especially for the ivies?

I would have done for CR score. For top schools it is recommended to score above 740 on CR. If you had 780 CR and 680 W then you could have let it go.

davez… there is the stupidest myth that CR is more important than Writing. Instead of listening to random CC people .. ask the schools and they will tell you they are of equal importance… 2260 is a good score and a 680 on CR is fine… if you want to retake it you can.. but do not listen to the people that say CR is more important than Writing. Not true.

Certainly it depends from school to school but during the recent college visits this is what I got from some of the schools
MIT - don’t consider Writing
Columbia - Consider it but not same as CR
U Penn - Consider it but not same as CR
Yale - Consider it as equal
Princeton - Consider it as equal
Harvard - Consider it as equal
Brown - Consider it but not same as CR

Certain schools may not consider Writing .. but how does that shoot down the value of Writing section with other schools? It does not. The vast majority of schools care about both equally!

lol…whether or not W matters to YOU is if it matters to the colleges you’re applying to. So if you apply only to schools that don’t care about it, you’re fine.
Whether or not that vast majority consider it equally is irrelevant.

Some schools consider W, some don’t, but your W score is fine. Your CR score is also excellent but if you aim to get into top schools, it’s not outstanding. I think it’s worth retaking; even if it goes up only a little, a lot of top schools will “superscore” you. Look at it this way: most of them are so US News-obsessed that they have almost as strong an interest as you do in looking at your SATs in the most favorable possible light.

But my CR SUCKS!!!
I ONLY HAVE 2 MONTHS TO PREPARE!!! and I have 3 subject tests to ace in a month!!! I really don’t have time to adequately prepare, which means no or negative improvement!
NOW REEVALUATE MY CIRCUMSTANCES!!!

My Asian friend who has the EXACT same 1st time score as I got only a 10 point improvement on his CR retake from 680 to 690. Is this worth it? Btw, his superscore was ONLY 20 points higher if you include W, which he raised from 780 to 790.

I was wondering the same thing. I got 730 CR and 800 on M and W on my second try. I feel like I could get higher on critical reading but is it worth it? I don’t want to seem like I suck at critical reading, but I don’t want to seem like I’m desperate for the perfect grade either.

I got 2260 and I’m retaking. Except I got 800 in reading, 770 in math, and 690 in writing. I hate grammar so much. I don’t know how everyone finds it so easy…

Circumstances can get you some breaks but for peace of mind (Now
through whenever you hear back) it is better to have scores on CR
above 700 for top schools.

For the majority of top schools CR does seem to get penalized mroe than
writing. i.e. lower CR score not as good as lower writing score.

Scores above 700 are usually acceptable. If youa re form a competitive state
then shooting for scores above 740 on the sections would be advisable.

Regarding Post #17:
you are within range of the top schools (at least as far as last year
grades are concerned).

Take a look at statistics for the schools you are interested in. Just as an example, at Cornell the middle 50% of CR reading scores range from 620 to 730. That 730 is the lowest in the Ivy League. At Harvard, the top of that range is 800, meaning that at least 25% of Harvard students have a CR score of 800. To put it another way, at most of the Ivies and other highly selective schools, a 680 will put you in the middle 50%, but toward the low end of it. At Harvard and Yale (and Duke), a 680 CR is in the bottom 25%.
