Hi! I am a rising high school senior and I was wondering if there is a benefit to submitting a supplement with my college application. I am extremely passionate about singing, and I participate in numerous vocal groups at my school. I feel that submitting a recording of my singing would be a good way to show colleges how hard I have worked throughout high school in the choral program. Is it worth sending a supplement even if I am not planning on applying into a music school? Could it affect my admissions decision in any way? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Do you have solos? It’s OK if you already have some recordings – but if you’re truly at a notable skill level, it’ll be noted elsewhere (rec letter? Awards?). I wouldn’t go thru much trouble to create one. If the recording is mediocre, it can dilute the strength of your app. Many people are devoted to the arts. Colleges know this and will recognize your achievements with or without the supplement IMHO.
I have a solo of the national anthem that I performed in front of President Obama, and the White House has a copy of the recording on its YouTube channel. Is it worth submitting that with my application?
I would ask the schools you are applying to if they accept supplements. In general, if the music/choral activities are on your list of ECs and you are not applying as a music major I don’t think a supplement (and I agree that it would have to be a solo performance) would have any noticeable impact on your application.
