Is it worth taking the SAT?

Hi all,

I'm a Junior in high school and I got a 35 on the ACT last December. I am happy with my score, and I will be taking the test again in April as it is mandatory at my high school. Is it worth taking the SAT to improve my chances at the schools I am looking at? I plan on taking two SAT subject tests, but I don't really want to take the SAT. However, my dad thinks I should. Here are some of the schools I am looking at:

U of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign (Illinois Resident)
Stanford - 1st Choice
MIT
UC Berkeley
UT Austin
UW Seattle?
Cornell
Northwestern

Thanks!

Check and make sure that all of those schools accept the ACT. If they do, you don’t need to take the SAT.

All of them do, but I was worried about preference.

Thanks!

You’re fine. Nice score! Same as me (:

No, I don’t think you should take the SAT. Stanford does not put that much emphasis on standardized testing anyway.

I think that all those schools will accept the ACT.

Have you read the webesites to see the test reporting policies of your schools? While many schools let you choose between sending the ACT or SAT (often +2 Subject tests), S does not accept Score Choice AND requires you to send BOTH ACT & SAT if you have taken them:

[Testing : Stanford University](http://www.stanford.edu/dept/uga/application/freshman/testing.html)

If you are satisfied with your ACT, get your parents involved and try to get out of taking it again. IMO (others disagree), I think the fewer times you test the better, for instance, Y says:

[No choice on scores | Yale Daily News](http://www.yaledailynews.com/news/2009/jan/16/no-choice-on-scores/)

While sitting the ACT twice is not a lot, it’s unnecessary to take it and you could get a lower score the second time.

There are some schools that require the ACT and a couple Subject tests (Dartmouth I believe), so taking the Subject tests is good. And S lets you use Score Choice on Subject tests since they don’t require them.

Thanks for all the input guys!
