Any experience about this school? Thanks.

The term ‘hidden gem’ is used to describe schools other than the big name schools (so Kent is meeting that requirement) that people outside of boarding school circles might not know, but that offer programs, academics, athletics, and a community that would be greater or match some of the offerings of the big names. Because I don’t have experience with Kent, I can’t tell you whether it is or isn’t, but it certainly has the ability to be one if you feel it is.

Thanks for the reply. It is interesting that Kent was not mentioned in the original hidden gems thread.

Not the awesome original thread but…: <a href=“2013-14 Hidden Gem Applicant Thread - #46 by PhotographerMom - Prep School Admissions - College Confidential Forums”>http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/prep-school-admissions/1545276-2013-14-hidden-gem-applicant-thread-p4.html

Post #53 ( It’s still a work in progress )

Thank you very much.

I know a lot of people have criticism about looking at school rankings, but Kent is considered one of the top ranked schools: http://toptestprep.com/best-boarding-school-rankings/

Just from looking at its website, Kent also has a pre-engineering program and a writing lab if you’re looking for things that distinguish Kent from other schools.

True- Kent isn’t “Hidden”. In the real world most Hidden Gems (including Kent) are very prestigious and well-known, yet (here on CC) they’re rarely mentioned.

(It’s ridiculous.)

I am not sure what you are looking for in a school. I can tell you that I live in the area of Kent and there is mixed criticism of this school in our community . Mostly it is known for parties and pot head kids (not my words) but when I poked around the community about Kent and that was the feedback.
You might want to look at The Millbrook School. My friends daughter has turned around her grades and has really matured/bloomed in this school. Also, Andover has it posted that they are still accepting apps. ?? BEST of luck!!

No, they are not according to this.
They are actually over-enrolled.

thanks skieurope …correction- Andover is interviewing this summer for 2015-16 !!!

I’m also a huge fan of Millbrook, but did want to gently point out that community scuttlebutt doesn’t tell the whole story of a school. I thought the poster was pretty upfront about declaring that this was just what some people unaffiliated with the school were saying. Having grown up in a college town, I grew up surrounded by people always saying that the college students were a bunch of drunken, doped up, vandalizing hooligans. The college in question? Williams College. I imagine there are a lot of people who do not have that experience of Kent. (a current colleague of mine used to teach there, and has a lot of positive things to say about the school.)

The internet provides one type of feedback. Visiting and contacting the school will provide another.

Hi deltabot. I went to Kent for four years and recently graduated this June. I loved my four years there and would not change a thing about it. Deciding to go to Kent was the best decision I have made so far. A close friend of mine is currently at Millbrook so I also know a little about Millbrook as well. Both are great schools. I completely disagree with the statement that Kent is all about pot heads and parties. At every school-public, private, prep, there are a group of kids who decide to engage in those activities. If you have any questions about either school or would like to know more about my experience at Kent, feel free to PM me.

Thanks for the reply.

DD is currently at Kent School and loves it. High Honors grades, plays field hockey and doing crew in Spring. Great atmosphere and easy to walk to town for supplies and restaurants. School is very strict about smoking, male/female visits, and especially cheating - quite a few on probation for that.
