Im asking this on behalf of a friend.

Accl*Mass=Force,

The campus itself is extremely safe. It's well-lit at night, and any student would say he/she feels entirely at ease walking alone at any time, day or night. We do have the requisite "blue light" phone boxes around campus, but in all honesty, I've never seen nor heard of anyone taking advantage of the technology.

The surrounding area is a bit of a mixed bag. Up on "College Hill" just north of campus is a fairly standard residential area. Just down the hill is the downtown Easton area. It's definitely not half as bad as people make it out to be, but with that said, it's just wise to go downtown with others at night. Then again, that goes for any urban area at night, no?

We really don't hear much about crime in the surrounding area, which I guess is a good thing. It's just not something that concerns Lafayette students, as the campus is fairly insulated up on "College Hill".

My daughter, a freshman at Lafayette, says basically the same thing as Candyman. Both the campus and College Hill are very safe, although she makes it a practice not to walk alone off-camus after dark. She has also been downtown with a group of friends after dark on numerous occasions either to go to one of the restaurants or on her return from the Easton bus terminal after spending a day in Manhattan. She also has gone downtown during the day several times with a friend to shop or attend the Saturday farmers market and has never felt unsafe.

She is aware that the South Side (south of the Lehigh River) and west side (west of 6th street) of Easton are pretty sketchy, but there is no reason for students to go into those neighborhoods unless they are participating in a community service project (or buying drugs -- which isn't her thing).

Any student who uses common sense and avoids the sketchier neighborhoods of Easton -- an easy thing to do -- should find Lafayette and Easton a perfectly safe place to spend four years.
