Break-Ins?

I saw on the Lehigh news there were multiple apartment break ins over the spring break. Is the area really that bad? I have visited and it did not strike me as appearing that bad.

On-campus is very safe. The first couple blocks surrounding the campus are getting safer because there are more student apartments and the lehigh police are now allowed to patrol that area. But south bethlehem (The area surrounding lehigh’s campus) is known to not be the safest area. Students are warned to never walk alone, especially at night. I’ve had some experiences seeing some things, but I’m not going to post the details. Wasn’t anything bad, just an awkward situation. There is the occasional mugging/robbery usually taking place during the night off campus, and the lehigh police always send out emails to all students informing them of these incidents (and they usually catch the people pretty quick).

Regardless, on-campus students should have no problems staying safe. I’ve walked around on campus at night and nothing bothered me at all. As for walking off campus… do it during daylight hours and just use common sense. Lehigh puts safety and security at a pretty high priority.

Thanks for the update. It is good to hear that the immediate area around the campus is improving. Obviously it’s a challenge in an area that has gone through such tough economic times. I thought the campus was awesome (up hill in all directions … ) thanks again.

on campus is usually really safe. i had friends freshman year who never locked their doors and never had anything stolen. i tend to be much more careful, and have never had any problems.

i live off campus at lehigh now and we set our alarm (installed and paid for as part of our rent) over spring break. we received no calls from the alarm company-ie: no one even tried to break into our house.

you can also register your off campus house with the lehigh police department, which is a good idea, so they can keep an eye on things while you’re away over breaks.
