Is LMU considered a good school?

Hello all, so I just got into LMU and i absolutely LOVED it when I visited out of all the schools I applied to. However, I'm worried that LMU doesn't have as good of a name as other schools and that it's not as good of an education as other schools? For example, in comparison to Occidental? Or Smith College. Of course I want to go to the school I am happiest at, but I also want it to be considered prestigious.

I want to be a psych major but do the pre-med track. Do you think LMU would be good for this? Do you know anything about LMU acceptance rates to med school?

Also, what is the teacher-student relationship like? If you need help, is it easy to get it? Do teachers go out of their way to help you? If you can't, are there peer tutors you can get?

Thank you SO much in advances for your thoughts!

I wouldn’t worry about the name of the school that much. Alumni relations are pretty good, and there is a career and development services that will help you find jobs. The psych dept. pre-med track are both great. The academic program is about educating the entire person, LMU is a very service oriented and you’ll probably experience that idea tied into all your classes.

Teacher student relationships are generally good, but every prof. has a different style. Some are more well-liked than others. You should look at rate my professors . com and look at the psych teachers ratings. You’ll be in small classes, you’ll never have to be in a huge lecture hall class where the teachers TA’s run the class. In fact, about half of your class will have less than 20 people in it. High quality professors, small class sizes, and friendly and students are consistently some of LMU’s strengths. “LMU’s strength is in the strong relationship between students and professors. Most professors respond to students’ questions within hours. Students are more than just a social security number; professors usually learn their students’ names after the first class, and a few take photos of their students. Also, bad professors stand out, and word travels fast around campus about whom to avoid.”

There is also an academic resource center where students and professors offer tutoring in basically every subject. You can schedule appointments for tutoring and you can even become a paid tutor at some point if that’s your type of thing.

I would definitely suggest going to preview day and asking these questions if you can.

Thanks so much for your response! I’m looking for as many opinions as possible, so please if you read this, post something! Be honest!

Hi! I was worried about the same thing as you and I’m also pre med! I’m committing to LMU tomorrow  the opportunities they have for pre med students are awesome. It is definitely one of their strongest programs. I went to their open house this past winter and was so impressed by their pre med program. 94% of LMU students who apply to med school get in! Which is incredible!

Oh cool, what made you commit to LMU for pre-med?

Also, current students, can you tell me the pros and cons about the school?
And other opinions on my first post are greatly appreciated! (Wether or not LMU is as good of a school as Smith).

With regard to LMU and Occidental to a certain extent, but more so with regard to Smith, LMU is not as “prestigious” or highly ranked. There will probably be less geographical diversity there. You might have to figure out if that equates to “good” for you.

My D was admitted to Occidental and Smith, both of which I believe are LAC’s, while LMU is a university, and smaller. The kids she met at their diversity gatherings seemed headed for big things. Some of the kids she met at Smith ended up at Ivy’s.

Another measure might be med school admission rates, and I don’t know of any that is better than 94 percent. I must say I am skeptical of how LMU achieves such a high med school admit rate.

Nonetheless, my son seems to have settled in faster at LMU than my D did, where she ended up.

The professors at LMU are extraordinary; education-wise LMU is top-notch. I’m only a freshman, but some of the professors I have had are absolutely brilliant. Class sizes are usually very small and the workload is challenging (of course depending on your major). In the past, many used to regard LMU as an easy, rich-kid school. However it’s reputation has changed and anyone would be impressed with the caliber of education that LMU offers today. If prestige is your concern, you have nothing to worry about. People from LMU go on to do great things, and the school works hard to ensure you are fully prepared in your field.
