I recently returned to college after 6 years. I had three classes to complete and have completed two and will be completing the last class in the fall. I worked ten years in the grocery industry (5+ years in management) and have been working for a non-profit the last two years in a food bank. My overall GPA when I graduate will be about 3.0. My degree will be in History with minor in Sociology. I was young and immature when I didn’t complete my degree in a timely manner. I am now married with a child, and have my priorities and goals more set.
For many reasons, I would love to pursue a career in education. (I live in Massachusetts if this will make any difference). The options I am looking at are a Post-Baccalaureate or a Masters of Education. I don’t know which track would seem the most realistic with my gpa and career experience.
If anyone has an advice I would be extremely grateful.
Congratulations on your success! If you want to become a teacher in Massachusetts, you’ll need your Masters of Education degree to become fully certified. Many school districts won’t hire you without it. Some graduate schools will want you to take and pass the initial MTEL exam (Reading and Writing Communication) prior to starting or being accepted into their program. Look for a program with a high pass rate on all MTEL exams and strong job placement. I work in a suburban school district and it is very challenging to land a teaching position. Applicants must go through interviews, run a trial class, and meet with approval of a committee. Some of the state schools have very strong education programs (Salem State, Fitchburg State, U Mass Lowell). American International and Fitchburg offer offsite classes as well. Best of luck to you!
I am planning on taking the MTEL Reading and Writing Communication this fall. I have a couple of different study guides I am looking at. I’m glad you mentioned Fitchburg State that is one school I’m currently looking at. I live in the Worcester area (I actually will be graduating from WSU). It’s been really hard to get information from Worcester State on their program but Fitchburg isn’t so much farther away that it would be a burden.
Thanks!
