My entire family lives in illinois and I live in NJ. My entire life, I have always wanted to live there. Just wondering if making friends will be hard for me since it is a 92% in state school. Will it be easy or hard? Please help. Because i want to work in chicago after college so i really want to have friends to hang out with. So will making friends be vary Hard? Also are almost everybody part of frats...?

i was in your same position. i was born and raised in nj but wanted to get away for college. being from nj didn’t make it any harder to make friends my first few weeks on campus (however, just be prepared for a barrage of jersey shore questions). i was worried when i found out everyone on my hall was from the chicago suburbs or korea, but in no time i was friends with the entire hall. as long as you’re friendly, open your door, and put yourself out there to meet new people, you should have no problems. but then again, that advice applies to everyone regardless of where they’re from. college is a fresh start and no one cares where you’re from.

there are a few people who will only hang out with their high school/childhood friends. but that’s expected of any state school (trust me i have friends at rutgers who do the same). but people here are generally very friendly and as i stated above, you’ll have no problem finding your group of friends.

as far as your fraternity question, greek life is big here, but its not a requirement to join. if you’re interested, rush a couple of fraternities and make the judgement for yourself. a lot of people also join professional fraternities, which may be related to their major eg. chemistry, pre-med, business, etc. about a quarter of the student population participates in greek life, but that includes all fraternities from professional to service to social.

best of luck

I don’t think the school is 92% in-state - it’s more like 85% or something from what I’ve heard (still high but not as bad).

Also, I think only about a quarter of the students are a part of greek life.

And just wondering, where in NJ are you guys from and what are your majors? I’m from NJ, too.

Making friends at U of I is incredibly simple.

There are a lot of people in frats, but there are also a lot of people not in them. I go there and am not in one. Either way you will have no trouble.

The dorms go a long way of making friends. Also join clubs! and a fraternity/sor. if you’re interested.

Definitely go to “Quad Day.” You will be overwhelmed by the # of people who want you to spend some time with them. At “Quad Day” you will feel a profound sense of awe and pride in choosing UIUC.
