I’m in between an 80 to 83 percent average. Is that good enough?
Might be a bit low. Grade range for consideration is listed as 85%-89%.
yes it seems so
I’ll probably cross it off my list.
Mcmaster was my target school as well too but I don’t see any other major from there being worth it.
it’s a sad day smh
“it’s a sad day”
There are many other very good universities, including many in Canada. McMaster is usually listed in the top 6 or 7 universities in Canada, and for some majors I have seen it ranked 4th. You should be able to get into a good university. For example you might want to consider York or Ryerson (both are in Toronto). There are lots of others to look at also.
By that do you mean you aren’t interested in any other major that they offer or you don’t think they’re strong in any other major that they offer? If it is the first I understand but if it’s the second you are wrong. Mac is predominantly known for it’s science programs especially in the areas of medical and life sciences. They have some very highly regarded and selective programs in that area. They also have some very unique and highly selective interdisciplinary programs (arts & sciences, integrated sciences, integrated biomedical engineering & health sciences, integrated business & humanities) and a well regarded engineering faculty. They will all require a very high average (low 90’s) to be admitted. On the other hand while Mac’s faculties of arts and social sciences aren’t overly remarkable they aren’t poor either by any means and you could potentially have a shot at admittance to those programs.
Otherwise with an 80-83% average you could consider schools like Ryerson or York as DadTwoGirls suggests.
I meant for social science. The plan was to apply to uoft, western and Ottawa for social science. Ryerson and formerly mac for business.
These are my two interests and I divided it up by the best school/my chances of getting in.
Seems i was 2 to 3 percent off for mac business and I don’t see a so sci degree from there worth it. I’ve heard not so great reviews about the dept.
However I’m still considering applying for business. A little background, I’m a US applicant so my unweighted gpa is an 81 percent but my weighted gpa is 90 (i took 8 AP courses total). unWeighted GPA is primarily looked at but weighted is taken as a factor too. Macs ACT score is a 27 which is exactly what is scored so I’m good on that end.
I’m having doubts do you think I should still apply or am I wasting money?
McMaster’s minimum ACT score is 27. Their minimum unweighted GPA is 80% for admission to any program, but as gwnorth mentioned, 85-89% is necessary for consideration for the School of Business. That’s after they convert your US GPA to an Ontario equivalent which likely would cause your GPA to be lowered. They also require two of: Pre-Calculus, AP Calculus, AP Statistics for American applicants.
I think you’re probably wasting your money.
Thanks for the reply. I probably won’t be applying then.
One thing however, I don’t think the part About GPA is correct. US curriculum and Canadian curriculum, specifically Ontario, Aren’t exactly night and day. I’ve spoken with a few admission offices and they never brought up anything about conversion. If they did that would be extremely unfair and would needlessly restrict me to a level of school that doesn’t match my caliber imo.
Anyway I’ll give the schools a call tomorrow to find out.
Anticipated Admission Range (subject to change): 85-89% is required for consideration based on a conversion if necessary to be equivalent to the Ontario High School 50% pass rate.

I’ve taught in Canadian and American high schools. Grades are very much inflated in American high schools compared to Canadian schools.
I’m pretty sure that applies moreso to other intl applicants.
If any two highschool systems were similar it would be Canada’s and the state’s, more specifically Ontario’s and the state’s.
We’ll have to agree to disagree.
Regardless I’ll give the schools im applying to a call to find out for sure.
Thanks!
With regards to your chances of admissions for social sciences you may not be competitive for Western either (but perhaps being a full pay international student might boost your chances a bit). Your chances at U of T are a bit higher and you should have no problem getting into Ottawa. The figures below are for Canadian students.
Secondary School Averages of Full-Time, First Year Students - Arts
Percent with entering average of…
School 95%+ 90%-94% 85%-89% 80%-84% 75%-79% 70%-74% < 70% Overall Average
UWO 10.1% 33.7% 43.3% 12.6% * * 0.0% 89.0%
UTSG 9.7% 29.1% 37.1% 21.2% 3.0% 0.0% 0.0% 88.0%
Ottawa 2.8% 14.8% 26.0% 29.3% 21.3% 5.6% * 83.4%
Some food for thought - You may want to consider a major in social sciences and a minor in business -D applied for a general arts program, then applied for a minor in management after first year and chose to major in International development.
