Does anyone here know if MIS is a good degree choice? I go to san jose state university. that's in the silicon valley if that makes a difference.

I have read a few people saying that MIS is useless.......so is it? is the job outlook good for it? and is it hard to get a job after graduation?

i read a yahoo article that included information systems as one of the 4 worst / useless degrees to have , which is why i’m asking. here’s what they said:

"Quick, what exactly do information systems majors study? Not sure? Neither are most employers, says Heathfield. That’s not to say this degree doesn’t build good skills; it’s just that if you’re interested in computer technology, it’s best to earn a degree that is easily understood, like a bachelor’s in computer science or computer engineering, says Heathfield.

“I’m not exactly sure what someone would do with [an information systems] degree in the current world,” Heathfield says. “In the early days, the roles of various programmers, software developers, and network administrators were more distinct, but not anymore. Now the degree to have is computer science or computer engineering.”

Info systems is hardly useless. In fact, a lot of the money and job vacancy in the biz field comes from IS fields. At the Big 4 firm I’ll be interning at, they said that they will be adding IS consulting headcount at unprecedented rates. I would use a real world HR number over some shmuck at Yahoo any day. Take those articles with a grain of salt, as a good number of their writers have an ax to grind.

Different sources will tell you different things. The job outlook can only be dim if you don’t differentiate yourself from other applicants. Business appreciates IS, but you’ll have to be familiar with much more. You can find requirements for jobs or internships online. You’ll see that you don’t learn many of those requirements until your last few semesters, which means you won’t have a meaningful internship. Learn some of those things on your own, and you’ll be ahead of the game.

I have an IS degree. I think it’s very helpful. You have you be careful of the program though because some barely have any computer components to them. You need to be able to understand and keep up in technical discussions.

I work as a system administrator. Responsible for configuring all accounts in our systems, doing auditing, working with the business on projects, working on system releases and upgrades, troubleshooting issues, etc.
