Is MIT acceptance rate same for even Computer Science or is it more easier to get in computer scienc

What kind of research work am I supposed to do as a high school student about this field and what kind of extracurricular activites can be shown. Should I be too worried about the high competetion or just focus on getting good grades

MIT admits to the Institute and not to any specific department. You are free to choose any department you want once you are there (typically after your freshman year, sometimes during your sophomore year).

There is no “standard” way of gaining admission. I recommend you do what interests you. Read the admissions corner of the MIT website for insight.

Just be honest and show them what you’re passionate about. You don’t necessarily need any research work for CS (I was accepted EA and plan on comp sci, didn’t do any research), though you have to show in some way that you’re passionate about the field. In my case, I just do a bunch of personal projects whenever I can (just for fun a lot of the time), I started a coding club, I basically live at robotics during the winter, taught Python at the town library, and work part time at a software company. Again, you don’t necessarily need prestigious research accomplishments and stuff, just keep doing what you love to do and convince admissions that you really care (and aside from that, show them why you’re an interesting person that would make a good addition to the MIT community)

actually Cory I’m really in a fucked up situation right now , as the time I have is only till november this year , and I literally dont have any extracurricular activity no sports nothing. I dont know anything about coding. I really realize my mistake now that I should have made opportunities for me and this hobby instead of playing on Steam .Can you please provide some activities I can do in this little time that will be an impact , Im ready to push myself to extra mile .Please suggest and help bro about the activites related to programming.

On top of it Im an International student.

@Aaryaman123:
There is lots of information available for how to get in to MIT.

MITChris, from the MIT admission’s office addressed that exact question in his blog.

That blog is at: http://mitadmissions.org/blogs/entry/applying_sideways

When you say “I’m really in a **** up situation right now”, remember there is no magic bullet for “what can I do in the next 10 months to show MIT they should accept me”. Adcoms are good at spotting high school upper-classman who suddenly take on activities uncharacteristic of their earlier years.

Look at the reality of your situation and move forward accordingly.

I know jpm Im reasearching this alot Im really desperate for it

@Aaryaman123 @cory2067 is exactly right. We can’t “tell” you what activities to do in the remaining part of your HS career to boost admission chances. Honestly, the smartest choice IMO is to have a backup plan in case you aren’t accepted. Admissions internationally is competitive, especially since they can now apply EA.

Video games and game design are a pretty big field nowadays, since it is very connected to AI. Perhaps you could look into that…?

And have you taken the required standardized tests yet?

Nah haven’t gave sat , preparing meanwhile for sat and level 2 maths, physics.
However I’ll be able to manage that
Would something like
Topcoder competitions help
Or Can I make an app or website (good one )

Like @cory2067 had a big spike of part time job in extracurricular , of course he had strong academic but academic are in my hand Just what about the spike I can make

Do realize that getting into MIT will not make or break your life. There are many schools in which you can get an excellent education. I have worked with excellent engineers from many, many different schools. Your education is basically driven by how much you put into it and not where you go to college. Begin now to do the things now that you want to do to be successful and see where it takes you. Enjoy the adventure.

@Aaryaman123 I don’t believe you’re going about this correctly. Don’t tailor your life towards getting into MIT (or any other top college). It’s fine to set that as a goal, and I encourage you to apply if you really want to study here, but you should also explore other options. There are thousands of great colleges and universities in the US alone.

I don’t mean to be harsh, but you should work (or continue working) on your English, as proficiency is a must at MIT. I struggled to comprehend your last post.

xD I’m really sorry for that weird explanation, my mind is puzzled actually thats why (Big Spike is a refrence from Allen Cheng’s article in PrepScholar , seeing his achievements made me feel like I’m nothing)

And @MITer94 and @HPuck35 I really appreciate the fact that getting into MIT or these colleges will not make my life but honestly all I need is to experience challanges and the thrilling feel of attending a top institute. College life would be the best time to experience .Im ready for this journey.

Also I have decided that either I would be in the best colleges (MIT,Stanford,Harvard,Oxford,UCB) otherwise better get into a local college and just focus on being good at programming and ofcourse skipping the rest colleges like University of Texas,Austin,University of Washington,University of Toronto which come in top 20.

Would this be a right decesion or these schools also have something special because paying for tution is a problem.
Thanks

Should I also apply to colleges like Carneige Mellon,Caltech,UCLA if they do provide similar grants and are really worth the tution fee.

@Aaryaman123 for US state universities at least (incl. UCLA, UC Berkeley), it is almost always a lot more expensive if you are not a resident of that state.

California UC’s provide no financial aid for International students. Expect to be full pay at $55K/year.

Damn I see :frowning:

Thanks alot @MITer94 and @HPuck35 for all the help
