So for the longest time I had a rec. letter from my band director and physics teacher, thinking that music and physics are both considered "academic subjects". However, after learning from the Stanford forum that music is not considered more of an art, is my music teacher's recommendation letter not count as an academic teacher recommendation?

Music – like painting, theater and dance – is considered “Art” in the world of academia. That being said, if you are applying to a college with a strong music program and want to be part of their orchestra, then having a recommendation from a music teacher makes sense. If not, the music recommendation will leave the academicians wanting.

Nope. But you may be able to send it in with an Art Supplement, if you were planning on doing so.

A music theory teacher, or music history teacher, I could make arguments for. A band director does not teach an academic subject, any more than a football coach or a driver’s ed instructor does.

I agree with this, although band is often a high school class with a grade.
