On Yale's Music Supplement form from the Common App, it requires you to have a rec letter from a music instructor to go along with your recordings. Does this mean that the professor who listens to your work reads this letter or do the Adcoms do it?

Also, does anyone know if this letter could be mailed in rather than attached as a document online?

Hmm I think you might be confusing that with something else. I was looking at the website about music supplements earlier and it didn’t say anything about requiring an extra recommendation, not that I could see anyway. It says they’re currently working on a way to upload music files directly.

“Supplementary submissions make sense for students with clearly substantial and well-developed talent that cannot be adequately conveyed in the rest of the application. Due to the large number of applications that Yale College receives, we cannot evaluate all supplementary materials that are submitted. Admissions officers and faculty members will be selective in choosing which submissions to review.”

From that, I think it could be either adcoms or faculty who review it. Maybe it depends on the nature of your supplemental material.

I did see something somewhere about additional recommendations that suggested a music instructor as a recommendor (I know I’ve read that on this site, don’t know if it actually comes directly from the school’s website), is that maybe what you’re thinking of? Most sources would suggest NOT including a supplemental recommendation, so it seems unlikely to me that they would require one for that.
