Is My College List Realistic or Optimistic?

Hey, I have a pretty good idea of what schools I want to apply to and wanted to see if my stats matched up to where I think they do.

Ranked 16/223
3.6 UW GPA 3.9 W GPA
2090 SAT: 740 Math/660 CR/690 Writing
All honors and college courses: 6+ APs
Over 90% on every NYS Regent's Exam (Graduating Honors With Distinction)
Two Years National Honors Society
Employed at minimum wage for one year
Competitively Sailing for 2 years- (Competed in Ontario 300: one of biggest races on the Great Lakes)
Volunteered At Same Organization 20+ Hours (Putting in more this summer)
Started a group to raise money for children in Uganda: working on starting more events

University at Buffalo (Safety)
University of Alabama (Safety)
Ohio State (Match)
Syracuse (Match)
Wisconsin (Match)
Maryland (Match)
Minnesota (Match)
Pitt (Match)
Boston College (Reach)
UNC Chapel Hill (High Reach)
UVA (High Reach)

Do I have any chance at my reach schools or possibly small merit aid at my match schools. Thanks.

I’d say your expectations are reasonable, except I would diversify your “matches”. Why not throw in a private school in there? If money’s an issue, you should at least still apply, see what kind of aid you’ll get.

However, let me comment on Alabama; they will give you great financial aid, I’m not sure what the stats are but if you have certain standardized test scores they’ll give you in-state tuition…same at Auburn. I have several classmates going to those schools.

If you’re passionate about raising money for kids in Uganda, I say focus on that. Make a big difference, get more involved, you know? Keep doing everything else, try to pull that gpa up, definitely get more service hours this summer, and get really involved with your passions.

I’d say aside from GPA, the only thing lacking in this is leadership positions. I’m guessing your a rising senior (correct me if I’m wrong), so it might be difficult to start now. However, you could create a club at your school. Being a founder of a club is a big plus; like I mentioned earlier, find something you’re passionate about and get involved, albeit it may look a little scketchy that you founded it only during your senior year (again, correct me if I’m wrong), but it wouldn’t hurt, right?

I’m not too familiar with the state schools you picked, but from my minimal knowledge I wouldn’t think they are too competitive; I’d think you’ll get in easily to all of them.

If you did something big with your passions, perhaps aiding Ugandan children, you might be able to pull UVA from a high reach to a low reach.

Chance me pack plz? Here’s a link: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1167845-chance-me-please-i-will-chance-back.html

Yes I am going to be a senior this year. This summer I am going to work on organizing a big event for Uganda. Syracuse is the only private match I have because I couldn’t really find any other private schools in the range that I was interested in. Thanks for your feedback I will chance you.

Isn’t Pitt private?

You have a shot at Boston College, particularly if you can get all A’s in the Fall. And, they love their sailing enthusiasts! On a bad note, they are very stingy with their merit aid, only shelling out money to a dozen or so applicants each year. Good luck.

Pitt is public and for the private schools I would be hoping more for need-based grants than merit aid.

Any other opinions?

Thanks for everyones help so far.
