Hi, I recently submitted all of my applications, but now I’m starting to doubt whether or not my topic was unique. Essentially, I connected my sexuality (lesbian) to my Chinese heritage. I also spoke of my struggle to accept myself (I eventually did). It started out somewhat melancholy, but it shows my thought process through the years and how I matured, etc. The end was optimistic, and I think it showed my personality well…but I’m just not sure if it’s a common topic. Would this sort of essay possibly set me apart from other Asian students with essays about research applying to schools like Brown University?
I think the fact that you were honest, had a unique topic, and explained how you’ve learned to accept yourself is just what colleges are looking for. You sound like a perfect candidate for any school looking to diversify, and that’s a good thing. It will set you apart and make you stand out. I wish you luck and hope you get accepted to your first choice!
Sounds like a good topic. good luck
