Is my GPA and MCAT score OK and how do I find medical schools that will be matches?

My GPA is about a 3.71 and MCAT is a 512 (I will not be retaking as I do not have the free time to prepare anymore)

My GPA might raise a little bit after next semester (my last semester b/f graduating). I have done shadowing, volunteering, research, non-clinical volunteering, etc and am continuing to do all of these things before I apply in June

Can somebody please suggest MD schools that I have a decent shot at? And what other resources should I use to find medical schools?

Two options for finding matches, one is to look at the GPA/MCAT stats for each school in the MSAR (https://apps.aamc.org/msar-ui/#/landing) the other is LizzyM score (https://schools.studentdoctor.net/lizzym_score)

What will you be doing next year, your gap year?

State of residence?

Ethnicity?

sGPA?

Your home state’s publics are always any applicant’s best chance for an admission. (Unless you live in California.)

Thank you

During my gap year, I will continue volunteering and hopefully find a research assistant position. I’m also helping my mother start her physical medicine & rehab private practice

Thanks for the tip! I am an Asian female from FL. I haven’t yet calculated my science GPA

Is your mother an MD?

Yes she is an MD. I was curious if that would give me an advantage or a disadvantage

Florida medical schools (median GPA,median MCAT score)

Allopathic

Florida Atlantic–3.76, 512
Florida International-- 3.71, 510
Florida State–3.74, 505
University of Central Florida–3.76, 510
University of Florida–3.84, 514
University of Miami–3.8, 513

New MD program opening fall 2018 --NOVA Southeastern

Neither an advantage nor a disadvantage but she would be a good person to advise you.

Thank you so much for all the info!

Oh I see, thanks!

Aren’t UF and FSU the only public schools on that list? Do the others have strong in state biases?

Public: FSU, CFU, SFU, UF.

Miami, FAU and FIU all give substantial preference to in-state residents. (FIU’s admission page states that at least 75% of each class is drawn from instate applicants.)

State residents get tuition discounts at the privates, so I assume those schools get some funding from the state.

Unfortunately, UMiami no longer gives preference to in state residents http://admissions.med.miami.edu/questions/florida-residency-questions

Would have been nice though lol

@WayOutWestMom do you know if Nova will have MD dual program?

CFU and SFU? Do you mean UCF and USF?

@iwannabe_Brown Yeah, I meant USF and UCF. Both are public.

@m22499 Dual program? Not sure what you mean.

Nova currently has a DO program. That program will continue.

Nova's MD program received preliminary LCME accreditation this fall and is currently accepting applications for its inaugural class this cycle. See: https://md.nova.edu

The programs are entirely separate, although both are located on the Ft. Lauderdale campus. I don't know how much, if any, interaction between programs there will be or whether they will share facilities and instructors.
