Is my guidance counselor right?

I want to be a special education teacher, but I am also excellent in business and would like to major in business administration as well as general special ed when I go to college next year. My guidance counselor says this is not possible and that if i want to be a sped teacher I can only double major in english or math. Also I am looking for colleges with a good special ed program I live in connecticut, and would like to stay in the northeast and midatlantic range.

You can double major in whatever you want, but double majoring in business administration probably won’t help for your special education teacher job. You should do it only if you like both.

You might want to take a look at the programs at BC. The school does not offer exactly what you want, but it may get you in the ball park. A student in Lynch School of Education is required to double major if they are an elementary ed or secondary ed student. If you double major in Human Development, you can then minor in organizational studies and human resources management in the Carroll School of Management. Then, apply for the five year program and get your master’s in special ed. This option was available a couple of years ago and I am assuming it can still be done. If you don’t like that option, I am going to assume you could get your second major in econ, since it is in arts and sciences, then stay the fifth year for sped. Lynch School of Education is highly respected.
