As of right now, I'm in the middle of picking schools to apply to. I really want to double major in economics and film, but someone told me that I have too many highly selective schools on my list. They are:

-Stanford University
-University of Rochester
-NYU
-USC
-UC-Berkeley
-Carnegie Mellon University
-University of Chicago (actually sent me a T-Shirt and a book in the mail)
-CU-Boulder

I have a 3.9 unweighted GPA, 4.0 weighted, 30 on the ACT (33 Writing skills, 31 Mathematics, 9 on the essay), 1890 on the SAT (retaking it), 770 US History subject test, 710 World History subject test, and 9 AP classes by the time I graduate (10 total tests because of Economics, and I'm hoping to get 4-5's on all of them). I don't have too many extracurricular activities, but I have done a lot with orchestra, video-editing, screenwriting, and boxing.

Thanks in advance!

Are you planning to apply to the Film Schools at NYU and USC? If so, then double-majors will be close to impossible there. NYU has a “Cinema Studies” BA within the College of Arts & Sciences. I don’t know about USC. I would say you have a very reach-heavy list, especially if you are applying to the film schools at USC and NYU (they have lower acceptance rates than Harvard and Stanford). I would also scratch Stanford, and keep the others as reaches. Are you a California resident? Have you calculated your UC-GPA? If it’s above 4.0, then Berkeley isn’t completely out of the question, but if it’s right at 4.0, then Berkeley is a reach. I’d suggest Santa Barbara instead. You might want to add Syracuse to your list.

@dkimg21 - Unless you have a hook, you do not appear to be a competitive candidate for Stanford, and I would think UChicago is also unlikely. CMU - depends on which school you apply to. CU-Boulder is not that competitive, so I don’t expect you will have any problems there. The other schools are all feasible. I’ll let someone else chance you for them.

Oops I meant to type 4.5 weighted GPA. And yeah, I do see how most of these are reach schools. Can anyone suggest any alternatives with a strong economics program and film studies/production program?

Chicago sends out a lot of t-shirts as a marketing ploy, don’t be fooled into thinking it means anything about your acceptance. Also, what is your financial situation? Have you run net price calculators for the schools on your list? I ask because just because you may be admitted to NYU, for example, doesn’t mean you would be able to afford it.

What’s your parents’ budget? What’s in-state for you? Have you run the Net Price Calculators on these colleges?
For a less-selective-than-Stanford college but still highly regarded for film: Chapman.
