I'm thinking about writing my essay about my experience being home schooled from 1st to 9th grade. It seems like a fairly personal and unique topic to me but please let me know what you think. Thanks.

Any thoughts?

It is a good topic, though it may not be the most unique because a lot of people are home schooled. That being said, are there really any unique essay topics? Probably not…

Right about it if you like it. Sorry for the ambiguity

If you think you can write it well and think it offers a good portrayal of who you are, go for it. A Brown admissions officer told me that one of the best essays he’s ever read was about a kid’s experience with riding the bus to school every morning. Yup, it was that simple and yet he wrote it in such a away that the admissions department could tell what kind of a person he was.

It is not the topic, it is what you do with the topic.

The best topic for you is the one that allows you to write your most personal, detailed/specific, and revealing essay. The one that is so clamlawn that only you could write it. If the homeschooling topic allows that–great!

If on the other hand what you say in that essay could pretty well be said by lots of people–which is what a cliche is–then I would favor finding a different topic.

It is not the topic, it is what you do with the topic.
