Is my SAT score (2360) good enough to get into HYPSM for an Asian?

Hey everyone,

I took the SAT in November without very much prep. I got an 800 in math, an 800 in reading, and a 760 in writing. Several of my friends got 2400s, and I know I can do better in writing since I made several careless mistakes. I could easily superscore a 2400.

Is it worth retaking the SAT?

Thanks

No, it’s not worth the time investment. Use the time to polish your essays, delve into your EC’s, anything but prepping for another round of SAT’s.

Congrats on a great score.

No, you should not re-take the SAT – it is absolutely not worth it, especially since the 760 is in writing and not the more scrutinized CR/M. Your score is awesome! What will distinguish you from other (Asian) applicants will be your EC’s, your essays, your recommendations, the major you plan on pursuing, etc. You definitely have a great shot at all of these universities! Focus on presenting yourself as somehow different than the stereotype (and I hate that you’re in the situation of even having to worry about that!). Consider adding Berkeley to your list – it’s just as prestigious, and it does not cap Asians to a certain percentage like the other universities seem to do, so it is 40% Asian. My point is that these other universities all reject numerous applicants with 2400s on the SAT, so that isn’t what will get you in, and your current score won’t keep you out. Focus on the rest… Good luck!

But only if your family can pay $60K per year.

Your SAT score will not be your limitation to any school.

If your grades are more than trivially below a 4.0 (unweighted) in the most rigorous course options, then they will be disadvantageous at the super-selective schools. However, they are “baked in” at this point if you are a high school senior.

A high level of achievement in an EC (e.g. state or national level championship, award, or recognition, or the high level of academic achievement described above coming from a very disadvantaged background) is also a big deal at the super-selective schools. However, if you are a high school senior, much of that is probably already “baked in” because you would have presumably been doing the EC for a while to get to the point of reaching that level or being in a position to possibly reach that level. A few more ECs at the “beginner” level probably won’t make much of an impact.

Even if you are a high school junior now, you have only a limited amount of time to boost your grades and ECs, if they need boosting.

It makes me sick to have a question like this asking whether a perfect SAT score is the key to Ivies.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I was just unsure because a lot of my friends did get perfect scores, and I didn’t know if not getting a perfect score would hurt my chances.

On the flip side, plenty of 2400/4.0 GPA applicants get rejected every year. Scores are just a part of the process.

OP may be in-state for CA. Where are you in-state?

I live in Virginia

In my opinion, you do not need to retake the SAT. Class rank is very important. If you have what they are looking for (athlete, oboe player, diversity) you may have a chance, but remember, there are thousands of well qualified students that are turned down each year. There are only so many spots to fill, no matter what qualifications one might have. Make sure you have a few target AND safety schools on your list. You don’t want all rejections, that could be very depressing.
