Is my SAT score bad for good colleges?

So my SAT score is 2260:
760 CR
700 Math
800 Writing
Will it hurt me that my Math score is low and my highest section is Writing? I will not be applying to HYP, but probably some second tier Ivies (Dartmouth, etc.) How will my score look?

It’s not bad but it doesn’t really set you apart from the rest of those applying I know people with 2400’s who got rejected from some ivies. Do you have things in your application that make you unique?

^Poppycock! Your scores are great. You are definitely in the discussion at any school to which you want to apply. Schools do not simply take the higher scores on the tests. Once you cross their bar for admission (you have) they will begin looking at the other aspects of your resume. (GPA, ECs, etc.) Having a higher score would only come into play if they were really on the fence between you and another candidate and that was the straw the broke their way.

If it was all about numbers, MIT would fill its class every year with 2400 scores. Congrats on your achievement and good luck in your search.

No, I don’t have any particular stand-out hooks or national awards or anything like that. I do like to write though, so my essays many be a bit unique and creative…other than that though, I really don’t have anything unique per se. Is it a no go?

At the risk of appearing insensitive, I am going to call you and others like you, out. Can you really not figure out that your scores are in the top 1%? It seems to me like a bit of showing off. If you can’t figure it out, perhaps you should consider less challenging schools.

@Torveaux‌ I think you may have misunderstood my piece of advice. I wasn’t implying that his score is bad (2260 is an excellent score, and anyone who says otherwise is either ignorant or jealous.) but rather that 2260 isn’t going to stand out too much on an ivy league application, you know? There may be thousands of applicants who have the same score, so I asked him, “What sets you apart?” The last thing I want to do is put someone down, especially if they did well!

@emmabeanie13‌ I suggest you post on the “What are my Chances” forum. You’ll get a good idea of your overall competitive-ness when you post all your details

Dart is hardly a “second tier ivy”.

^Never quite understood the term, myself. The schools all have a different vibe, but despite the fact I think they are all over-rated, they are very good schools and the academic differences among them are minuscule.

Xavier, I think I understood, but I think you and many others misunderstand how it works. The score does not set anyone apart, it merely gets them in the door. You are absolutely right that the rest of the application is going to matter, but the premise is wrong. It is not like they start off with the 2400s and work their way down comparing people with the same score. It is more like they set a bar for that year and comb through the applications that meet that bar. My understanding is that the bar is actually a combined metric using test scores and GPA (and perhaps class rank for those who use it). GPA is modified by school and for courses the college values (ignoring PE and such). Once you cross the magic bar, it all depends upon everything else, for everyone. They can reach back into those beneath the bar to round out the class as they see fit.

I’m crossing a bridge and a ■■■■■ just launched himself at me.

@Xavier97 Anything above 2250 looks the same in all honesty.

Not really. An evenly balanced 2250 has that effect, yes, but there’s a slight chance the 700 math could hurt an applicant. I still believe the cost/benefit analysis of working for that 50 points isn’t great, though, especially if you can use that time to do far more interesting and meaningful things!

For math/engineering type schools, the 700 in math might hurt a bit, but otherwise your scores are very good. A lot of really selective schools don’t put much weight on the SAT (it’s merely a tool to see if you’re ready, then they move on to the rest of the application). Talking about imbalanced scores, I got a 610 on reading. If you have other things that compensate, you shouldn’t worry.

“second tier ivies” lol. Get real bro.
