Is my schedule too much??

Hi guys,
I am a rising senior, and was wondering what you guys thought of my schedule (too easy or too hard). The classes aren’t in order

  1. AP Gov
  2. AP Comp Sci
  3. AP Physics C E&M (independent study at lunch for just the E&M part)
  4. AP English Literature
  5. AP Stats
  6. AP Art History
And I’m taking some other classes, but this is where I feel the meat is. Thanks!!

The difficulty of each class depends on the teachers at each school. At my school, AP Gov, AP Physics C, and AP Lit are very hard classes, and AP Comp Sci and AP Stats are considered easy. In my opinion, your schedule is pretty challenging.

I have been debating about doing Euro instead of Gov, but in my school, Euro is a very rigorous class, and really simulates college. There are several hours of homework a night, and discussions in class. I am hesitant. Gov does not really interest me, and I find European History interesting. I am not afraid of doing a lot of work, but I just don’t want to have a weekly mental breakdown with college applications, and finishing standardized testing and whatnot!

It really depends on you, for some people it’s possible to manage six AP classes. For others, it may not be. Only you know what you can manage, others don’t. However I would say that six AP classes is a bit difficult (at least for me). The AP Gov and Physics would be the toughest I would think, but if your willing to do the work that’s needed, I would say it’s well worth it!

What if I were to replace Gov with Euro?

Drop one or two of them. It’s your senior year, so take it easier. You already have college apps and a ton of stuff being thrown at you, so just dropping one class will make things easier. And by the spring you’re going to be so burnt out!
I’ve never understood why people obsess over taking so many APs. I told myself 3 was the most I’d take a year because I’m busy outside of school and want to be able to direct a lot of attention toward my APs. It’s great to challenge yourself but there’s no reason to spread yourself so thin. Have an easy “breather” class or two.

Well my top choice is Penn, and I am compensating for only taking 4 this year. I want to make sure that they realize I am challenging myself @TotallyTrudy . Thanks for responding!

That was really the original point of AP before they started offering watered-down courses.

Then don’t take it. 6 AP’s is a lot for senior year, particularly when you will be spending a lot of time on college applications and essays.

You don’t need to compensate for taking 4 APs. That makes no sense. 4 APs is more than enough for any school. Don’t do 6 senior year. Take at least 1-2 regular classes. Spend time on better things like ECs and applications

Thanks for the input @skieurope and @virsha24 I just want to make sure that Penn thinks I am taking a very rigorous schedule

FWIW, Penn accepted me last year with 2 AP’s and 2 post-AP’s as a senior; there is no need to go overboard, IMO.

@skieurope I appreciate the response. Idk. I might just wait and see which teachers I get when my schedule comes out next week. If I get an easy english teacher, I think I will stick it out

Just from my experience, the experiences of my peers, and what I’ve read on here, your schedule is pretty rigorous, especially considering you’re a senior. Plus, 4 APs in a year is pretty impressive. A lot of people on CC obsess over AP courses, so it’s easy to be swept along with them, but a very teeny tiny sliver of the population goes on CC, especially in the “high school life” / AP section. In the grand scheme and against the competition that you’ll face, your schedule would probably be fine even if you took 2 AP courses this year.

I think it’d be wise to drop one or two, specifically ones you aren’t especially interested in, like Gov. You need to channel some of your energy into your college applications and scholarship programs. You know, senior things. (:
