Is NC State's business school good?

I was looking at nc state as a business major but is it a good business school?

I have a lot of friends and family that graduated from NC State. It seems to be a GREAT business school. I believe the business school itself is ranked in the top 50.

What sets it apart from most though is the job opportunities available to you when you graduate. It’s right beside Research Triangle Park which has over 200 of the most well known business in the world. I can say for a fact not many schools have the placement opportunities NC State has. Everyone I’ve known who graduated there was lucky enough to get multiple job offers and have a job lined up months before graduation. My uncle graduated with a business degree there and is currently a top executive for KPMG. Raleigh IS NC State territory. So theres that if you plan on working in the area.

The only con I can think of is that NC State is more nationally known for their engineering programs. And the beltline traffic can be horrible during rush hour.

I’ll be happy to try to answer any specific questions you have. I’ve grew up in NC and have been on their campus more times than I can count.

BTW: What other colleges were you considering? And do you have any idea on where you want to live/work after you graduate?

Thanks, this really helps. I currently live in CT and I’d like to like within driving distance of most of my family who live in the northeast and while Carolina is a stretch I think I can do it. I looked at Indiana (too far away), UMass (feels too easy to get into, like I’m selling myself short) and Penn State. I’ve always kinda been obsessed with the auto industry but I’d like to go in as management so what do the job opportunities look like in that field in NC. of course i don’t have to stay in NC but still

If you want to get in the automotive industry the connections are definitely there at NC State. The main reason being Nascar is right down the road. They heavily recruit from Clemson and NC State which have 2 of the top Auto programs in the area. Clemson specifically being a top 10 auto program due to their International Center For Automotive Research but NC State is really not far behind. You mention some other great colleges you are interested in. I’m sure as long as you do your part you can go to any of them and become sucessful. They just wouldn’t have the connections to the industry like NC State has since it’s right in it’s backyard.

Here is a list of the last job fair if you want to take a look at what companies come and recruit on their campus. They had 372 companies attend! That to me is VERY impressive.

Here is some information on the Auto Industry in NC you might be interested in.

http://www.thrivenc.com/automotive/industry-workforce

“The state’s manufacturing tradition fits well with the automotive industry and North Carolina ranks first in the Southeast U.S. and ninth nationally in total manufacturing employment. More than 160 motor vehicle parts manufacturers employ more than 17,000 skilled workers here. In addition, more than 26,000 people are employed in engineering fields in North Carolina and the number is projected to grow 12.78 percent over the next five years.”

I was just looking up Penn St and their connections to the industry is equally as impressive as NC States. Looks like they would have the edge in Alumni connections which can be important for that first job.

And while I still think NC State has a great business program (ranked in the top 50)… Penn St business program is hovering around the top 10 in public universities. don’t think you could go wrong with either choice. Good luck.

Thank you, you’ve been very helpful

Umass easier than NC State? NC state (Raleigh) is #95 and UMass (Amherst) is #76 on the National Rankings. Hope these are the correct schools. lol (http://■■■■■■■.com/82cl5x2) (http://■■■■■■■.com/82cl5x2)
Also UMass’s Business school is ranked 36 by Business week. (http://■■■■■■■.com/lzq7jxy)
(I can’t find NC state)

UConn’s another great state school (Though lower ranked in business than Umass) and it’s in you state, why don’t you go there? (UConn is ranked #64 vs Umass’ #36)

PS- Penn states stats are #30 In Business so slightly higher than Umass. But also you may have to pay a bit more since you don’t get the New England resident Discount on state schools. Anyway, Best of Luck!

Also kinda sorta posted Umass twice in the link, sry (http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-colleges/north-carolina-state-raleigh-2972)

according to the rankings umass business is ahead. But if you look into it NC State is a bit harder to get into.

NC State had a higher incoming SAT, GPA, % in the top 20% of class, and an admit rate of 50% (63% for UMass). $5000 less tuition a year as well for OOS. Might be tougher to get into because U Mass might just have more available spaces for incoming students. I’m not very sure. I do know that rankings really don’t mean much unless you are in the top 10 or so anyway so all are great choices. Personally if all things were equal… I’d rather live in Amherst than Raleigh.

I did search UMass and it’s connections to the auto industry. Come up with nothing. Could be the worst possible choice out of all your schools listed if you wanted connections to the industry.

Last Career fair Umass had 80 companies show up. Pales in comparison to the 372 at NC State. I would REALLY worry about that if I went to UMass.

Thanks guys. @Greenman57‌ the reason I say umass is easier is because my school uses a program called naviance and umass accepts people at a lower gpa than ncsu for my school

@someguyinNC @sc3277 Ya rankings are bunk is some ways, but in a business environment in particular I would guess that employers skim the schools stats. Also, like you said school stats are bunk for a reason, one of them being separate departments. All those school wide average SAT’s and GPA’s matter little when you are dealing with such a large school and a plethora of departments. In this case I would say that the students at the Penn state and UMass’s business schools must be very solid and obviously above the average student given the rankings. (Not to say NC wouldn’t be) Lastly, I think that I was simply just trying to say that UMass has been on the up and up lately and it meets OP’s criteria of being close to home and has a solid business school so ultimatly I hope OP finds his best college in general. (Though it does seem that NC’s a shoe in if he wants to go into the Auto industry)
