Is Notre Dame a reach for me?

What are my chances, realistically, of getting in?

3.9 UW GPA
30 ACT
rank top 5%

vice president- student congress
president- student council
volunteer at oakwood hospital
president- great books club
NHS
nationally ranked figure skater

The figure skating will definitely help, but ND is a reach for almost everybody. Also, your ACT is a little low.

Figure skating is big (I dont know much about it, but I'm assuming that becoming nationally ranked takes up the majority of your time). Less than 25% of their students score less than 31 on the ACT, so that could hurt you. Depending on how difficult your courseload is, I'd say just get your ACT up and youre looking good.

Yes, I think ND is a reach for you, but I also think you have a good shot of getting in. It is not a shoo in though to say the least. You know what you have to do, it is mainly on the ACT, give it another go and just see what happens. Good luck!

You guys are being VERY hard on this person. I think she has an excellent chance... seriously, how much better can you do???

I understand what you are saying but the reason I am like this is because the valedictorian of my high school with a 1340 SAT was rejected last year. At this point, I think that ND is a reach for most everyone. ND just seems to really stress test scores, and since a 30 is below average, it just is a reach. I don't mean to be too negative, I do think the OP has a good shot and I believe I said that from the beginning, but I just have seen some kids get rejected with stats that I thought should easily get them into ND and that is why I am cautious. I wish everyone the very best, I truly do. I just am cautious as someone who myself was rejected by Notre Dame and had to transfer into Notre Dame a year later.

Icicle, retake the ACT and take the SAT. Prep for both with the guides available in the large bookstores, like Borders or Barnes and Noble.

Irish is exactly right. A 30 is just not high enough, imho. Remember that the 25% who are admitted with a score below 31 are probably recruited athletes, legacies, or those with some other real hook.

You don't want to submit an application with a weak area that you hope they overlook, especially when you can retake a test. On their admissions site, in ChatTime, once someone asked what is the number one mistake applicants make when applying to ND. The answer: not retaking standardized tests.

A retake is feinately worth a shot, but if your in range, then focus on other factors. The scores alone can onl do so much; when you are able to set yourself from the rest of the pack is the most important thing.
Keep up the good work.
