Just wondering,
On may way to visit Purdue, I swung by ND, since I had always sort of wanted to go there ever since I was younger, and their football team is sweet. I ended up really liking the campus and the atmosphere there. I know its not a highly ranked engineering school, but it did have my major (I am thinking mechanical or aerospace). I was wondering if anyone could give me some input as to how good their engineering school is, or if their degree pulls any weight in the job market.

I saw one list from several years ago showing their chem engineering is as good as Purdue's but generally other engineering pgms at Purdue were ranked higher; both being in top 50 nationally, however.

Define good? Notre Dame has a decent program in Engineering, but it is not good. If you want the Midwest and intend to major in Aerospace or Mechanical Engineering, I suggest Michigan (#3 and #2 respectively), UIUC (##7 and #6 respectively) and Purdue (#4 and #7 respectively). Obviously, MIT is #1 in both those fields and Stanford, CalTech, Cornell, Princeton, UT-Austin, Georgia Tech are also excellent.

I am providing you with a listof the top undergraduate programs from the USNWR, 2005 edition:

AEROSPACE ENGINEERING:

1 Massachusetts Institute of Technology

2 Georgia Institute of Technology

3 University of Michigan-Ann Arbor

4 Purdue University-West Lafayette

5 California Institute of Technology

6 Stanford University

7 University of Illinois-Urbana Champaign

8 Princeton University

9 University of Texas-Austin

10 University of Maryland-College Park

11 University of Washington

12 Cornell University

13 Texas A&M University-College Station

13 University of California-Berkeley

15 Pennsylvania State University-University Park

15 University of California-Los Angeles

17 University of Colorado-Boulder

18 Ohio State University-Columbus

19 Virginia Tech

20 University of Florida

Notre Dame has a decent Aerospace program...certainly among the top 30. But given the fact that very few universities offer a major in Aerospace Engineering, the difference between the top 6 or 7 programs and the ones ranked out of the top 20 is actually significant.

MECHANICAL ENGINEERING:

1 Massachusetts Institute of Technology

2 University of Michigan-Ann Arbor

3 Stanford University

4 Georgia Institute of Technology

4 University of California-Berkeley

7 Purdue University-West Lafayette

8 California Institute of Technology

9 Cornell University

23 Yale University

25 Michigan Technological University

25 North Carolina State University-Raleigh

25 University of California-Davis

i'm going to be majoring in engineering at ND next year. I chose it more for the undergrad experience than the ranking of the engineering program though. I'm turning down 2 top 10 engineering schools to go to ND because I think the qualitiy of life and people there are awesome.
