So I got accepted to NU through ED few days ago. I was so excited to go here until I realized that the ranking of NU in mol. bio and genetics is not excellent at all and that I could’ve applied to much better ranked schools in this subject. Should I care about subject rankings or is it unimportant at undergraduate level. Please let me know if anyone has studied genetics at NU or generally has an idea so I can stop freaking out about ruining my future. Thankss.
Biology is offered in every college; anything within top-50 or even top-100 is still pretty decent out of over 1,000 programs. I don’t think a difference of, say, 30 spots, is significant at the undergraduate level. If you are wondering about research opportunities, NU awards over $3M grants just for independent undergrad research each year, more than many peers out there.
Seriously? Their Genetics and Molecular bio is absolutely excellent.
What is it with kids who seem to think that there are only 100 universities in the USA, and that anything which is ranked lower than 20 in the world is not “excellent”.
Dude, there are 2,000 nonprofit colleges and universities (aside from over 1,000 nonprofit junior colleges and community colleges). So a colleges which is in the top 50 or even top 100 is still excellent.
Of course, if you are choosing between NU and one of the top universities which also happens to be in-state for you (like Wisconsin or UNC), than attend the in-state university, and withdraw from ED on financial basis.
However, if you have no financial issues with NU, attend it and know that it is well known and very highly regarded across the USA and the world, and it will provide you with an excellent education among super smart students in a gorgeous lakeside campus, in a wonderful campus town, and a quick “L” ride from one of the great cities of the world.
