Northeastern was my 4th choice school but I got into the NU.in program. I’m scared of choosing Northeastern now because I’m not a big fan of studying abroad for 1st semester and it is about $5,000 more. I was probably put into the program because my common app essay was about how I used to live in India and that I’m very adaptable. It also seems like a kind of unattractive offer because you spend a semester abroad, and then you come back to boston, but how would the social situation go? And then sophomore and junior year, you go off to your co-op cycles. So, you basically spend a year and half off campus, and again how would the social situation go?
Which other schools did you get into?
If you are looking for the “traditional college experience” then Northeastern is not for you, even with Fall Boston acceptance.
@TomSrOfBoston I don’t really care whether or not it’s a “traditional” college experience, I just want an inside perspective on what life at Northeastern is like, especially with the NU.in program
@airway1 I got into Kelley School of Business as well. I heard that the decisions for BU, UCLA, and UMiami came out as well, but I’m going to look at the decisions tomorrow. Although, I’m not really expecting to get into UCLA because no one in my school got in this year that I know of so far
A lot of kids’ friends went to NEU. They all seemed to thrive there and did well after graduation. One of mine was accepted under the same terms you are, as well as an acceptance to UMDCP with a spring start. Neither of those options were attractive to him, and both schools immediately were crossed off his list. It was important to him to start out in the fall after high school grad at a school. Neither school was a “dream” school either and he was accepted to his first choice, so that might have been a factor in his dismissing them so quickly. Had either school been a top choice for him, it might have been a difficult decision.
He did not make any assertions on his application about being adaptable or wanting to go abroad. In fact, that NEU was in Boston was one of the things attractive to him and he so mentioned it. The abroad program is offered to those who did not make the “A” list for acceptance, but a certain number of spaces are available mid year for those who can start at that time, given NEU’s schedule. UMDCP staggers some of their acceptances due to housing availability. I believe he could have started in the fall if he found his own housing. But again, I think he was not on the “A” list for acceptances to be offered that situation.
The pinned post on NU.in has discussion from parents/students who have done it as well as a few posts linked in the thread itself:
