Is NYU actually trying to recruit me?

I get a lot of college spam from random universities, probably mostly attributed to Collegeboard’s student search service. Recently however, I got an email from NYU admissions with the subject line: “NYU is impressed with your academic achievements”.

The email goes on to talk about how they have seen my amazing academic performance and why. I should apply to NYU. The rest of the email is generic marketing stuff. It also has the admission counselor’s info at the bottom.

Am I getting this b/c of student search service and my high past score? I do have a LinkedIn, which has a lot of my impressive achievements on it. Is that how they found me? Or is this just a normal marketing email? I was just surprised because most emails are so generic and from much lower ranked unis.

It’s marketing pure and simple; they want your application money. If they get you to apply, then the marketing worked.

Is there anything that’s actually specific to you? Specific awards, accomplishments, etc.? This still sounds like “generic marketing stuff” to me.

I suspect tens of thousands of students have received the exact same email, from CB’s search service.

Marketing…and note that NYU is not known for merit scholarships…the avg. merit scholarship is about $5000.

My kid got the same exact email. In addition to getting your application money, as @skieurope suggests, they also need your application to increase their application pool numbers. The more who apply, the more they can reject, thus leading to a lower acceptance rate and an appearance of being more selective.

My daughter got so many of these from Washington Univ in St Louis that when they stopped we felt we’d lost a friend - or at least been dropped from the Christmas card list. She never expressed any interest in WUSTL, didn’t want to go into medicine (they had that idea too), she’d never been to St Louis. She also got one or two from Harvard and Yale.

You’ll know when a school really wants you.

S2 got the exact same email.

For us this was Chicago! (Actually I believe for most people this is Chicago, lol)

Lol yep to UChicago. Though they actually knew my schools, and I had some back and forth with their admission rep. Harvard sent some nice things about disability and me being latina. Both were kind of funny though bc there’s no way I’d get in.

The answer to your question: Not trying to recruit you to attend. Trying to recruit you to apply.

They want more applicants to create a large denominator for calculating the acceptance rate.
