So I am a sophomore (going to be a junior soon) and I am already owing about ~$45,000. I am almost 30 years old (life happened, long story short).

By the time I graduate, I'll owe about ~$100,000. For the sake of privacy and ease of discussion, I am rounding. I am willing to provide more details.

Will I have a difficult time paying it back?

Well, should I quit now? I can still manage to pay back $45,000 or so but I’ll be drained. I have some money but I’ll be completely broke, personally by then. Of course I’ll work (I’ll just go back to what I was doing, working).

What do I do then?

Transfer to state school?

Go to a CUNY school? CUNY doesn’t seem to be respected anywhere… That’s the only reason why I stuck to NYU.

I hope for more response! :(

I’m assuming that you can’t finish at Stony Brook, which would be a lot more cost effective and IS highly respected. From what it sounds like, you have “obligations?” .

I know it sounds obvious, but how easy it is to pay back a $100K loan depends entirely on how much money you will make and how much it costs you to live. I don’t think anybody here can answer that question without doing the math.

For most people the answer would be no, but you are already 2 years in and quite mature. You are already in for 45K. How well are you doing? Do you enjoy it? What kind of career do you forsee? There are some very lucrative areas of computer science especially in NYC on wall st? Are you on track for those? It might not be unreasonable if you can see the ultimate career path. How risk adverse are you? Do the math and try to understand how the payments will impact your lifestyle.
