I love NYU's foreign language and linguistics programs, which would be my potential minor, but how well known or comprehensive are they for IR? I got into GWU's Elliot School as well, and they gave me a 22k scholarship per year. UMd is also an option, who gave me 12k a year. Yet another option is CMU, but I have heard that CMU is really only preferable for a student focused on one subject, which is certainly not I. Bear in mind that I also plan on attending graduate school, which is not exactly cheap, either.
In conclusion, is NYU worth the expense for me? Are there any opportunities to get departmental scholarships?
Thank you.

NYU’s IR program is an honors one, which means you have to apply to it in you’re sophomore year I’m pretty sure.

Yes, NYU’s IR program is an honors program. It requires a 3.65 GPA or higher to be considered for application. And you apply once you have completed the required pre-reqs. (Either sophomore or junior year). How much is NYU going to cost you per year? Are you parents covering any part of the cost? No school is worth full expense at NYU’s yearly cost - $60,000.

I did not know that it was an Honors major; on the Common App, I was able to select it as an anticipated area of study. So then what will my major be going in? My parents are going to have to pay basically everything at NYU: the only financial aid I received was a few thousand dollars worth of unsubsidized loans.

The International Relations major is a wonderful program. NYU has a very strong politics department and they rank #1 in International Law for the grad law school, but even at the undergrad level their international expertise in politics, business, and law are top notch. I’ve taken IR classes though I did not apply in time to be an IR major myself and they are difficult but very rewarding classes. They are certainly worth the money more so than many other schools at NYU (like my original major in Tisch…) but I’d have to agree that no NYU school is completely worth the money. IR comes close, though.
