Okay so I want to apply early to Stern, however I'm hesistant about what NYU can give in finaid. So is it really that bad? Can someone tell me what they got at one school compared to NYU? Any information that can help would be appreciated. Thanks

(First number is Freshmen, second number is all undergrads)

Need based Aid
Students who applied for financial aid 68% 64%
Those determined to have financial need 54% 54%
Students whose need was fully met (excluding PLUS or other private loans) N/A N/A
Avg. financial aid package (% awarded aid) $20,047 (53%) $18,652 (54%)
Avg. need-based scholarships or grants (% awarded aid) $13,275 (50%) $12,592 (51%)
Avg. self-help aid, such as work study or loans (% awarded aid) $7,771 (51%) $6,635 (49%)
Avg. need-based loan (excluding PLUS or other private loans) $4,377 $5,070
% need met (of those awarded need-based aid) 68% 64%

Non-need-based aid
Avg. merit award (% awarded aid) $7,020 (10%) $6,925 (10%)
Avg. athletic scholarship (% awarded aid) $0 (0%) $0 (0%)

Probably the salient points is the rather low percentage of need met and the rather small percent of students awarded merit aid (and the measly amount they're given).

Thanks for the info. Also would applying early warrant a different finaid package then applying regular?

Also does anyone have a personal comparison of what they got from NYU as to some other colleges. So I can see how much the amounts really differ.

Any school that meets full need will give all but the most exceptional student (URM, recruited athlete who is a national debate champ) a much better package. Chances of them meeting your EFC are small and regardless, their loans are high.

If your parents can't afford more than their EFC, fall in love with another college.

I will help you out here.. I was an athlete but it really didn't effect my fin. aid. It might have helped me land a scholarship from NYU but anyways.

NYU-
$10,000 scholarship.
$2,500 Work Study
Loans, Loans,Loans, and more loans.

Total cost would have been around $38,000 after the scholarship.

Private School #1(Meets full fin. aid need)
$32,000 School Grant(Free money)
$2,500 Work Study.
One loan

Will cost me around $12,000 for a year after grant and work study.

Both NYU and the private school cost around the same. I'm paying around my EFC at the private school and would have been paying 3x my EFC at NYU.

Being an athlete does make a difference, hswrestling07. From personal experience, and in comparison to other schools to which my daughter was acccepted, NYU's financial aid is, in your words, "really bad."
