I plan to attend ole miss as an international undergrad( from Dubai). I’m not the party kind and neither am I interested in greek life, will I have trouble getting accepted/making friends at ole miss ?
You might be better off asking this in the Ole Miss forum, but I can tell you that Ole Miss has an International Student Living Group that you might be interested in. It should help you meet others in your situation: http://studenthousing.olemiss.edu/international-student-living-group/
I am from MS and I would not think, out of this entire country to choose from, that it would be a good place to go. While Oxford is a great college town, it’s in the middle of nowhere. Oxford is certainly a more liberal spot in MS but I implore you to go to a state that isn’t in the south. People will get mad at me for saying that but, while I think you’ll be accepted & make friends, it won’t be nearly as easy if you go to a more open minded state. It’s also the poorest state, the most unhealthy (highest for obesity), the last in education. Please go to a more diverse place! Any other choices?
And Greek life is HUGE, one of the biggest Greek schools in the country!
What is your major - that should determine what university you consider first, then look to see if the school has other things unrelated to your major that you would be interesting to you. Best school(s) for your major should be the first thing you look into, then scholarships and lastly the area the school is located.
Ole Miss is in a great college town but it doesn’t have the city aspects of bigger colleges (nor the crime of big city schools). Greek life is NOT needed to fit in, you can have a great college experience at Ole Miss without Greek life.
Ole Miss has over 20,000 students, i am sure you could find some friends with that many people.
You won’t have any problems making friends at Ole Miss. My daughter attends Ole Miss. She is a very liberal kid who is nerdy and doesn’t party. Ole Miss has been THE BEST college opportunity for her. I know it is the South and probably has earned a reputation of racism, sexism, ----ism. But she’s found a school where the administration has worked really hard to turn that reputation around. Also, and international student scene that is vibrant. Don’t be afraid to put Ole Miss on your list. You might be pleasantly surprised.
What’s ironic to me is the worry or accusations of racism and sexism because “it’s in the South.” If one has been paying attention to the grievance calls at least half of the universities that show up are either ranked LACs located either on the West or East coast, public universities not in the South or Ivy League schools.
