I'm an engineer major. I plan on applying for grad school. I've had a years worth of research exp with a second author publication. I come from a reputed but not well know school but plan on applying to a top grad phd program. Assuming everything else is good such as gpa gre, reqs, etc....is a years worth of research exp "enough" to be accepted in a top school or would they expect more years of research in their candidates?

In a master’s program, maybe.

In a top doctoral program, I would think most schools would expect at least 2 years. But it really depends on the quality of your experiences and your recommendation from your research mentor.
