Just wanted to see if somebody could give a little insight on the BC Orientation and the stuff that goes on during it. I know you pick classes and stuff, but what is some of the fun stuff that you do?

You do a lot of icebreakers, watch skits performed by the orientation leaders, etc. Some people like orientation, some don’t. I personally found it awkward because people try to become best friends in 2 days. I only know a few people who are still friends with people they met at orientation. I’ve already moved beyond the saying “Hey!” to people who were in my orientation when I see them around campus. Anyway, do I think orientation is the best thing in the world? No, not really. Can it be fun and get you excited for BC? Sure.

It really depends on the person. My D was in a great group and one of the people she met during orientation is one of her best friends today. On the whole, we learned a lot, had a lot of fun and were very impressed.

My S had a great orientation experience. He was coming from far away and did not know anyone at BC. He had fun, made friends, and learned a lot about how things work at BC. Two of the guys from his orientation group have remained some of his best friends, and he will be living with them again next year (in the Mods…)

As a parent, I also learned a lot and really enjoyed orientation!

Orientation is great. There is a good balance of “orientation” and fun activities. It’s not a life changing experience but is enjoyable and, more importantly, informative.

What do you exactly do for activities and stuff?

One night they have a bunch of things in the plex, like go-karts and bouncy things and ice cream. I think they had laser tag too. They just open it up and it’s completely optional, but everyone goes. Usually there’s a huge game of dodgeball between the orientation leaders (like, 15 of them?) and the 300 something kids that are there, which is interesting. Somehow the orientation leaders usually win… against 300 people. And they have a dance competition which is fun to watch, and usually a few members of a BC dance group like Synergy are there too.

whats it like living in the dorms during orientation? (not with your roommate during the sessions other than #7)

Orientation tends to place the students in various, often non-freshman, dorms throughout campus. You are only at the dorm to really sleep (get back at around 11 and wake up at 6-7), so not a whole lot goes on.

Orientation can be intimidating cause you’ll have that “*** I’m actually going to college” moment at some point, but you’ll be happy and excited to be going to BC. If you hit it off with the kids in your group it can be a great time, if you don’t it’s enjoyable but a little boring at times. Becoming an orientation leader seems to be far more selective than getting into BC, so the kids that do it are great at their job.
