Is religion a bad common app essay topic?

I wrote my common app essay about converting from conservative protestantism to a much more liberal faith. I made a point of explaining how I spent an ample amount of time critically thinking about my beliefs and how I grew and matured from this. I had a teacher look it over and she said it was extremely well written but "wasn't appropriate as a college essay because most people keep their religious beliefs to themselves." She also told me how I have been brainwashed by my catholic high school into believing that normal people discuss faith and spirituality in regular conversation, and proceeded to suggest that I rewrite my common app essay about a different topic. I believe that I wrote a good essay, but I would not want an admissions officer to think I'm a freak for writing about religion, which is what the teacher who read it over predicted would happen. Is my topic too religious or strange for a common app essay? The teacher made out like I would be classified as a religious zealot or Quran burner or something because of my essay choice.
